We don't need no education: Buyouts offered for nearly 300 UNLV faculty and staff
UNLV officials announced today they are offering buyouts for nearly 300 long-term faculty and staff in the latest effort to cope with budget cuts affecting the university. University of Nevada, Las Vegas President David Ashley said about 200 of those who qualify for the buyouts are tenured faculty. He said he expects as few as 10 employees or as many as 50 will accept the buyouts, which could save the university between $1 million and $5 million per year.

1. What are the terms? As a person with 26 yrs in, the terms could be very good.
Let someone offer me a 5 year buyout with cash incentive and I would have to really drink on that.

2. How are they out of money?
There's not a lot of detail to that story.

4. Prison systems are expensive
And they compete for resources with higher education (and often win).

See: Prison cuts postponed
July 16, 2008

The latest reductions follow the Legislature's June 27 special session called by Gov. Jim Gibbons to deal with a $1.2 billion state tax revenue shortfall projected through mid-2009. While most agencies now face additional 3.3 percent cuts atop earlier reductions, the 13,000-inmate prison system's cuts work out to just under 3 percent.

The cuts follow a series of dismal reports on slumping revenues from major sources, such as casino and sales taxes, as a result of a housing crisis and slowing tourism industry. In advance of the recent special session, lawmakers and the governor already had slashed many agency operating budgets, delayed building projects and drawn down a state rainy day fund to help cover the revenue gap.

7. Gambling and tourism down?
There was a recent news story where the brothels were complaining that the truckers were spending so much on diesel that they couldn't stop for a little recreation.

3. Older faculty are likely to be liberals, left over from the 60's & 70's
and tenured..with pensions..

Gotta bring in those eager young right wingers for "balance"..and they work part time and cheap..
