There is a nice little piece by Friedman in the Times about the failure of bushco to address the energy problem. (Hell, he not only doesn't address it, he exacerbates it.)

Nice analogy about gas prices is this from Friedman.

When a person is addicted to crack cocaine, his problem is not that the price of crack is going up. His problem is what that crack addiction is doing to his whole body. The cure is not cheaper crack, which would only perpetuate the addiction and all the problems it is creating. The cure is to break the addiction.

1. Money is an incentive.

Is this the same Friedman that supported offshoring?

Will he offer incentives to SUV and Hummer owners, as they were also given tax incentives to get the wretched phallic-challenged things in the first place? Car dealers would rather have the bubonic plague and gonorrhea over used SUVs and Hummers.

2. Germany Does This

They actually tax folks on the emissions of their vehicles in certain cities.

Want a Hummer???? Then pay for the pollution it emits as well as the gas or petrol it guzzles. Sounds fair to me and a great incentive to get citizens to use less feul and emmit less pollution.
