Chicago gets the new peeper scanners at airport

By Jon Hilkevitch | Chicago Tribune reporter
10:24 PM CDT, July 19, 2008

Air travelers in Chicago will soon be literally exposed to a revealing full-body scan before boarding planes.

The new procedure, which is sure to make some passengers blush and others burn in anger over what critics call a virtual reality strip-search, is part of a "security evolution" at airport passenger checkpoints around the country.

It comes amid continuing concerns that Al Qaeda-trained suicide bombers are potentially only one plane ticket away from a U.S. attack, according to the nation's top transportation security official.

"If despite all our best efforts we fail to keep a terrorist off an airplane, at least we must make sure that suicide bombers cannot smuggle the explosives they need to cause a catastrophe past the airport checkpoint and onto the aircraft," said Kip Hawley, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for security at the nation's airports.

Accompanying stepped-up efforts to counter that threat, authorities said they think passengers will prefer a no-touch alternative to a physical pat-down by airport workers searching for concealed weapons, explosives and other prohibited items.

1. DIA has that already.
I even went through it. I didn't care.

3. DIA has one at only one security point
and I got waved into it on it's 1st week in place. It falsely said I had something in my right front cargo pocket on my shorts (it was just excess fabric).

Walk around to the north security entrance, no peeper. Same with the A Concourse security line. Just regular old metal detectors. I forget exactly how much each of those machines cost but they're incredibly expensive.

and they re-hire unionized security...

5. Everyone will be conditioned to accept this.
In fact, Americans will accept anything on any premise.

10. I. Will. Never. Ever.
go through one of those. If that means I can't fly, I won't fly. There is no way in f---ing hell that I would ever willingly be humiliated in such a way. I bet there are many others who won't do it, either.

11. Interesting question. It seems there is political support
for no privacy rights for citizens at present from any branch of government. Being as we are subjects now, my tendency is to say no.

12. What explosives?
They don't "need" explosives - they used box cutters or their hands!

Some of this stuff is just ridiculous. It's another scam for the people who makes these things to make $$.
