1. Read the history of the treatment of the Cherokee Indians from 1800 to 1840
, especially in Georgia and you will see a preview of the type of behavior that characterizes today's politician.

In particular, note that John C. Calhoun created the Bureau of Indian Affairs, appointed himself the head of it,and after engineering the removal of the Cherokees, he came into possession of one of the Country's most productive gold mines. He used Cherokee slaves to mine the gold.

3. He also was one of the chief architects of the civil war although he
died 15 years prior to the beginning of the war. His writings and speeches on the subjects of nullification and secession were the fundamental arguments used by the Southern land owners who favored secession.

I've been wondering lately if possibly the civil war was stirred up by men who figured that they could profit from it just as Cheney and his cohorts calculated the results of the Iraq war. It would have been easy to do since the reaction of the Southerners was totally predictable as was the outcome of the war. I haven't researched it yet. But, an examination of who acquired the lands after the civil war would be very revealing.

I know from my own family history that they owned about 35% of the land in one of the counties in Mississippi. Twenty five years later they owned almost no land there. They had lived there since the early 1800's. Apparently, they lost everything as a result of the war.
