Michigan has a Canton, just like Texas, Minnesota, Kansas, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina.

None of those Cantons came up, though, when Stephen Colbert, host of "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, lauded the travel schedule of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"I've got his schedule right here," Colbert said during Monday's show. "This week, Sen. McCain is rocking through Kennebunkport, Maine ... Rochester, New Hampshire ... Baltimore, Maryland. That means crabcakes! And Canton. And not the crappy Canton in Georgia. I'm talking about Canton, Ohio! Where he is hosting a ... finance reception."

The comment riled Georigia's Canton lovers, many of whom said so on Internet message boards.

It's unwarranted, the Georgia town's mayor says. Surely, Colbert has our Canton mixed up with another?

"He's never been here," Mayor Gene Hobgood says of the comedian. "He doesn't realize it's one of the fastest growing cities in the nation."

Colbert will get quite a tour if he stops by the so-called crappy Canton, Hobgood says. And for that other Canton, where they've got, apparently, non-crappy finance receptions?

"I have never been to Canton, Ohio," says Hobgood, a Cherokee County native. "No desire to go there."

Also: from the Cherokee Tribune (no link)

Historic Canton Homeowner Association President Bill Grant in response posted an invitation on the show's blog at www.ColbertNation.com for Colbert to come to the city. He invited Colbert to the association's next Mint Julep Party on the Porch.

I am going to report you to The Nation! They will revoke your balls for this!

America will not stand for anything less than the double-balled patriotism of Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A.!!!

You haven't heard the end of this!

Ok Atlanta and surrounding areas let him know we all want to have a Mint Julep with him.'

"It's the right thing to do."

2. He must have meant Canton, NC.
I grew up 30 minutes from Canton, NC, and it smells like a fart. They had a paper pulp plant there. Sometimes we could smell the fart where we lived.

16. Here ya go:

They mention everything but the fart-air.

Actually, the plant has been sold a couple of times, and is no longer a pulp plant. The smell isn't what it used to be, thankfully.

18. Please stop writing e-mails to the No Fact Zone e-mail address
My name is DB Ferguson, and I am the webmaster of No Fact Zone. Our web site is NOT an official site for Stephen Colbert or 'The Colbert Report'. If you want to contact Stephen, I would recommend either using the contact form on this site:

http://www.colbertnation.com/cn/contact.php

Or you can snail mail him. I sent a few of you the wrong address in error - I verified the address with a Comedy Central staffer and was told that they recently moved. So please use this address.

Stephen Colbert
c/o The Colbert Report
Comedy Central
345 Hudson
New York, NY 10014

Also, please remember, this was not a direct attack. He's a comedy show - he probably just did a search for Canton and decided to use the one in Georgia for the punchline. And his character is, as he has said on multiple occasions, a "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot". I live in Dallas, and he slams Texas all the time. I'm just excited when he mentions us.

Thank you.

23. Yes, but ...
But see, I don't have any contacts with the show to forward your requests to him. So when you send the requests to me, all I'm going to do is ask that you send them to the addresses in my original post.

Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 07:14 PM by unapatriciated
Your should be taking advantage of these new hits to your website,
Gather all the e=mails and forward them to Colbert Nation
If you can't forward the actual e-mails then write to Colbert yourself letting him know how many e-mails you received regarding this and even quote some of them.
Who knows he might even refer to your website on the air.
Imagine the hits you would get then.
