South Dakota's only abortion clinic closes its doors for now
A state law that requires abortionists to inform women – before an abortion – that the procedure "will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being" apparently has done what no other pro-life protest has been able to accomplish – the closure of Planned Parenthood's abortion facility.

Today was the day for a federal court ruling affirming the South Dakota law to take effect, and as usual pro-life protesters gathered from several different organizations at the Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood business, as did several women who apparently had appointments.

However, a spokesman for the protest groups said no abortionists arrived and the women left after being counseled by the pro-lifer sidewalk counselors.

"I think Planned Parenthood cannot figure out a way not to comply with the law," said Dr. Allan Unruh, who with his wife has been integral in South Dakota's Vote Yes for Life campaign.

This makes my skin crawl. I can only hope the women there can go to another state and get one, and avoid being forced to undergo dangerous and illegal procedures.

talking about the situation in 2006.

the clinic closing.

4. I remember warnings in the Minneapolis City Pages a decade ago
about the de facto end to abortion due to clinics closing and providers retiring. I think the MN branch of PP was also linked to the Dakotas?

The statistics on how far women would actually have to go for an abortion (distance and time) in rural areas is sobering.

14. I believe MN PP flies doctors to the Sioux Falls office
once or twice a week for services (not just abortion).

6. I wish all medical professionals within that state
would stop giving medical care to anyone who voted for this idiocy.

Antibiotics for an infection kill genetically unique separate individuals.

Removing a hot gallbladder or appendix removes billions of genetically complete human cells.

Relieving pain thwarts the will of the god who ordained they have that pain.

My guess is that the right wing bastards would start to come around pretty fast.

7. I think the problem is there are no doctors willing to say the script
I'm not sure how you get around having to say it, even in a total half assed way.

10. Can't they just preface the
required script with words like, " State law requires me to read this ideological manifesto which is neither based in science or fact. I sincerely apologize, but here goes... then run through the boilerplate with no emotion. When they are finished they could again qualify the speech by reminding the woman that the words have no meaning but are the vindictive rants of hateful lunatics.

It would be interesting to read the courts justification for the next law that prohibits the physician's explanation of the speech.

13. That was my thinking too
Look, if the doc knows its BS, and the woman isn't hearing anything she hasn't thought about before, ...then does this have to be as restrictive as people think?

anyone who is going to hear this message is going to understand that it is BS . . .

16. This state seems ripe for some real change from the extremists in charge now --- !!!
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 02:20 PM by defendandprotect
Note the call for "Christians" to rise up and push this ---

In fact, we need some Christians who think for themselves to begin to understand the necessity

of reproductive freedom vs patriarchal control of women's bodies ---
