I did something smart today. |
|
I had a baby gift for a work mate, but had forgotten to get a gift bag or wrap--then inspiration struck. I used one of the reusable bags I'd bought at a grocery store--cheap, environmentally friendly, and she loved it, said she'd been meaning to buy some for her shopping. I've decided that this will be my new "wrapping" for gifts.

She'd said she wanted to get some, for emergencies, so felt very green ;). I don't know where the current environmental debate stands about disposable vs. cloth, but please don't disillusion me if I made a mistake.

Water use versus non degradable. I'm not sure where the gavel fell on that one after all.

19. And don't forget the detergent and bleach used for cloth diapers. |

It really is a toss-up, I think. I used cloth mostly, but had disposables for certain situations. But, still, it seemed that I was damaging the environment no matter which I used.

With their not yet potty trained toddlers, they have cutouts on the bottom of their jumpers so that they just poop where they are.

10. My sister saves the Sunday comics all year to use to wrap presents |

Or if she receives presents in store bought gift bags she re-uses them. There are several that have been making the rounds of the family for many, many years now.

15. That's the cool thing about gift bags rather than paper. |
|

You can reuse them for many years. My family also has gift bags that have been circulating for years. Some of them are pretty tattered, but I don't think anyone cares.
That said, I like the idea of reusable shopping bags or bandannas even better.

20. That's true - I may buy some good quality shopping bags and use them |
|
But the last five years or so I've been giving gift certificates instead of presents. Then I am sure they get what they want. For the under 18 crowd, I just give money - they are always happy to get that!

Whole Foods sells nice reusable bags made from recycled plastic bottles. Pretty colorful and cheery. Perhaps they need to start making reusable plastic gift bags too.

16. My grandma makes quilts for all of us as gifts. She presents them folded up in matching pillowcases. |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 01:57 AM by Herdin_Cats
I think that's a great way to wrap a quilt. I know my grandma doesn't do it to try to be "green," though. She's just very pragmatic. She used to wrap our Christmas presents in plastic grocery bags.
