Hagel and Rudy.......Just curious --- Would you rather
If You HAD (REALLY HAD) to choose someone for President who

1. Would bring the troops home immediately, but was very conservative on social issues

OR

2. Would "stay the course" in the Middle East, but was liberal on social issues.

Which would you choose? I think some Conservatives are having to face just this problem, and am wondering where DUers would be on such a dilema.

I would rather choose a Dem. But, if a 'Pug had to win, I would
look at character. Hagel would win.

13. Isn't Hagel the guy that probably stole his election in Nebraska?
That doesn't sound very reassuring.

16. Nah, I think he won fair and square, or Ben Nelson
would have dug up the evidence. They HAAAATE each other.

Still waiting to see one republic with true character.

18. What about Hagel owning the voting machine company that gave
him a win when the exit polls showed otherwise???? He dieboled it. I don't trust either of those guys.

1. I've said it before, if Ihad to choose a Pub candidate, mainly because
you can never tell about an election and we might be stuck with him for four years, I think I could live with Hagel.

Although he may be socially conservative,I don't thinkhe's insane like the other RWers, and Rudy is an incompetent leader who got lucky fora few weeks in his career and did a decent job dealing with 9/11. Before and after those few weeks, he's been a drazy man & and failure!

2. If those were the only choices, I think I'd have go with Ghouliani.
Disgusting as that would be, he would probably be less injurious to this nation and Iraq is completely fucked either way.

3. I have such a strong dislike of both these guys that I just couldn't choose.
You lay out the difficulties with both and that's exactly the problem I have with them.

A tough, big-league question.

4. People will die either way: Depends on whether you prefer male or female dead
Roe is within a hair of being overturned and another social conservative (anti-choice) SCOTUS will be guaranteed with Hagel yielding women dying from illegal abortions.

Rudy, I assume, will keep the ME in flames yielding military deaths...mostly men.

Being a mother of young daughters, I would have to pick Rudy for their future.

5. You're forgetting that Rudy has predicated his nomination
on appointing conservatives (constructionist) justices to SCOTUS--that's the only reason social conservatives are giving him the time of day--that, and continuing Chimpy's Reign of Terror in MessO'Potamia--you would lose both ways with Rudy. And he has no foreign policy experience, unlike Hagel.

8. Rudy's playing the fundy sheeple with that hogwash...he IS a social liberal
Rudy is an egomaniac and driven beyond belief...he will mouth those words to get through the GOP primary but I am not buying it.

Again, if those are the two choices, and as a mother with daughters...I would choose Rudy...if I had sons, I may have chosen differently.

9. I disagree...He promised the SCOTUS thing, flat-out. No backing away--I watched
the interview on Hannity. Appointing someone to SCOTUS is not a stealth maneuver--GOPers would HOWL if he didn't choose a strict constructionist. Both men are likely to choose the same type of judge.

6. OMG, the first two replies are my nightmare scenario.
Hagel has been very successful at portraying himself as a "centrist" and "honorable", and the sheep are taken in, yet again.

Wake up, he is a brighter version of arbusto®! Unlike arbusto®, he is bright enough to follow the play book and would be another raygun, only worse.

12. A very unpleasant choice
Hagel appears to be against the war so that's in his favor. Rudy is supposed to be less conservative on social issues but he's a party whore who would do anything for support. So who's to say what he would do once in office? Hagel has issues in his past, including supposedly a connection to his ownership of an electronic voting machine company. Frankly I don't like any of the candidates but I don't think I would trust Giuliani at all, as he's a completely fabricated, manufactured, plastic, new-and-improved product candidate who will be owing lots of favors if he gets elected. Therefore, I think I would even take Insane McCain over Giuliani and certainly Hagel, even though I'd have to wear a clothes pin on my nose.

14. Neither - just because a corporatist says he will do or be something
means nothing. Serving the corporations and oil interests is what they all do in the end, no matter what they claim. Then they will add a dose lies and deceit to cover up their misdeeds.
Remember Dick "I have a plan" Nixon. He was going to get us out of Nam. Yet when he was finally drummed out, Nam was still going strong some 30,000 dead soldiers later. Would that be what Hagel will do?
And how about Mister Compassionate Conservative himself. Remember his promises on health and educatione etc.? How's that been working out?
No, If I were given the choice of A) Rudi or B) Chuckie, I may choose C) Canada

15. Hagel in a heartbeat-- because...
at some point it's not about issues but the sanity of the person in the job.

Hagel might be conservative and on the "wrong" side of a lot of things, but you can talk to him and make a deal.

Rudy is an arrogant, egotistical incompetant who is making a career out of one lousy photo op standing in front of a hole in the ground when he took credit for what was done by everyone else.

Giuliani as President would be nightmare far worse than Shrub.

21. 100% Hagel. I know what a snake Rudy is. Also, since there's always
at least a 50% chance that a pub would win, I'd rather one that's not so repulsive as the current front runners.
