Barbara Boxer is asking for our help in honoring Al Gore prior to his testimony before Senate
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 05:55 PM by Skinner
RECEIVED IN MY EMAIL:

There may be no single person who has done more for our environment than Al Gore.

From his years of service in the Senate through his term as Vice President and especially
recently, with his Oscar-winning movie "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore has been a
steadfast, outspoken leader on environmental issues.

That's why I'm so pleased that Vice President Gore has accepted my invitation to testify
before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on March 21st! And I want you
to help me give him the warmest welcome possible.

Sign my online thank you card to Al Gore now -- so I can personally deliver it to him
when he comes to testify later this month!

With the threat to our planet from global warming growing day by day, the time to act is
now. My colleagues on the committee and I have already begun crafting legislation to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase conservation, and develop new alternative
energy sources to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels -- especially foreign oil.

Al Gore's appearance before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee comes at
an ideal time. It provides us with a tremendous opportunity to gather additional
ideas for fighting global warming, to elevate the visibility of this important debate
-- and to thank Al for his many years of leadership and hard work.

Won't you join me in thanking Al Gore for his leadership on the environment?

Sign my thank you card to Al Gore now!

With your help, I hope to present Al Gore with a thank you card signed by tens of
thousands of Americans when he comes to testify later this month. So please, take
just a moment to sign our thank you card -- and then invite everyone you know to do the same.

Thank you for helping me give Al Gore the warmest of welcomes on March 21st -- not
just from committee members, staff, and members of the public who come to the hearing,
but from tens of thousands of Americans like you as well!

In Friendship,
Barbara Boxer

1. Calling BB: "It's the climate, stupid!"
I like Barbara Boxer, and I am grateful to her for forcing Congress to debate problems with voting and vote-counting in Ohio following the 2004 Presidential Election.

But I am afraid that her initiative to collect signatures thanking Al Gore, though no doubt with the very best of intentions, runs the risk of distracting from the very serious message that Al Gore will be bringing to Congress on March 21st.

Al Gore does not want attention for himself. He wants people - citizens, elected officials, lawmakers - to focus on addressing the climate crisis, supporting clean technologies and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

So I am guessing that Al would prefer if we would go visit his website www.algore.com and then spend a few minutes e-mailing our friends and family, talking to them and helping him collect signatures and statements addressed to members of Congress.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

9. No, I think it enhances Gore's work!
This is a good thing. Now we have leaders standing up and recognizing what is right and good and far overdue. I applaud Senator Boxer. I will sign the petition joyously.

11. You mean attention and diversion from the topic of climate change that a draft gives him?
I don't see anything wrong with people saying thank you to the man. He deserves thanks for all of his work on the environment which I hope he continues for years to come because we need him doing this. Perhaps if you think signing this card diverts from the climate crisis you can tell that to the Draft Gore people who are going to be arrogant and rude enough to actually make this political by going to Washington DC that day to not support this issue, but to continue harrassing him regarding running. That isn't a diversion? I don't think thanking him for his work on this issue diverts from anything, and hopefully those signing this card to thank him have also taken this challenge in their own lives, and those in Congress who thank him actually propose to not disappoint this planet. I can't wait to see him on Capitol Hill that day as it will be a culmination of all he has done regarding this issue as he is now a witness as his mentor Roger Revelle was thirty years ago. Let's hope this time he is not disappointed and we are not diverted by those who only see this as an opportunity to get their own faces on tv.

13. Members of Congress should focus on the issues
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 03:40 AM by Apollo11
I think it's great if a bunch of private citizens are going to Washington DC to show their support for Al Gore, in the context of the fact that the race for the Whitehouse (or at least what I call the "pre-season") is already in full swing. It does no harm to point out that Al Gore is well-qualified to be President, that he is the best person for the job, that he already won once before, and that he is younger than Hillary, Giuliani, McCain and Clark.

But I think Al Gore would prefer that Members of Congress take the opportunity of the March 21st hearing to focus on the issues. He will be bringing x-thousand messages to Congress from private citizens (collected thru www.algore.com). I just think it then looks kind of embarrassing if Barbara Boxer - who is the chairman (sic) of the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works - then says "well that's great, and on my website I collected y-hundred signatures thanking you for all your work".

It kind of goes along with the MSM idea that caring about the planet makes Gore an exceptional person. That "of course, most normal people don't give a sh!t about the environment", and so Gore talking about the climate makes him a 1-in-6 billion kinda guy. Which in some ways I guess he is, but his point is that we should ALL be focusing on how we can save the planet. Maybe Gore sees himself as a kind of teacher, but not as a savior or messiah.

It's my own personal opinion. People have different opinions about all kinds of stuff. Like Boxer's novel "A Time to Run". Some people say it's worth reading - others say it's trashy. I didn't read it - so don't ask me ...

But I still say that Al Gore would prefer us to focus on helping him collect signatures and messages to Congress.

That's why every post I make includes links to Al Gore's site and blog. Please feel free to join me in this! :)

18. I don't have any sites
All I am doing is recommending sites that I personally find interesting and valuable.

You may have seen that a lot of the posts here on DU include links to other websites.

Of course I don't need Al Gore's permission to link to his blog.

Just like I don't need your permission to link to your site.
