How much higher is your electric bill vs. this time last year?
Just got my July bill.

Rate increases and higher temperatures made for a $225 bill this month.
This in a 350 sq. ft. apartment.

My rates have increased 34% over this time last year.

How about you?

1. I paid $133 for a 950 sq.ft. apartment. That is up from a little under $100.

2. Where are you? California is suppose to be hit the least
because of the Enron crisis and consequences but most of
the other states are being hit hard with Texas I heard the most.

6. Yes, Texas here.
Thank God for the free market benefits of deregulation. :sarcasm:

Interesting though that Zinx's bill is up about the same percent and we're clear across the country from each other.

10. Miles, they rate apartments a lot higher than

houses. I had a 1000 sq. ft. town home I lived in before I bought my house. My electricity would probably easily be double what I pay for twice the square footage. It is ridiculous.

Edited to add: I live in Arlington, TX.

4. About $50 more than last year.
The electric bill was $440. I have a 3000 sqft house with a pool.
July was a real scorcher around here... even for the Phoenix area.
The August bill should be a bit less than July. It hasn't been quite as hot.

That seems to be a bargain.

12. We've reduced our electric usage by quite a bit.
Most of the increase is because of a price hike by our electric company. Our summer rates are always higher here and now July and August have higher rates than May, June, September and October. Our winter rates are cheap and my bill is often only around $125 to $150.

5. $45.50 for July, electricity and gas combined....
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 05:42 PM by mike_c
It just about doubles during the couple of coldest winter months. One of the perks of living simply in Northern California.

on edit-- that's about the same as last year, maybe up a couple of bucks.

We have replaced REAL light bulbs with the fake ones that are supposed to last year's and "save energy", we replace all OLD (5 or more years) appliances with "energy star". Our stove is gas.
We have put in a tankless water tank AND we do not have air conditioning..

My bill is up about $20 . The funny thing is the company announced that there would be a raise in DELIVERY rates in Feb, so this is all an increase for the energy itself.

I am considering wind or solar, I am sick of throwing my money away and those damn fake light bulbs make me nuts !

11. Our per-kilowatt-hour charge will be going up about 20% the middle of August.
Based on our previous bills, that could make nearly $400 for a 1,700 sq ft house, if the weather is really nasty. Less if not.

I've looked around for lower rates, but have found nothing significantly better from the major companies, and the small ones can go out of business at a moment's notice and throw you on some kind of emergency plan that runs upward of 30 cents a kwh.

Ah, the joys of deregulation.....

14. I have to check, but I think they've more than doubled.
Used to be about $150 (for a 3-story house- I can't believe your rates!). Last bill was $325- I called in the power co. because I thought something was wrong with the meter. It increased almost $200 in one month- yes, we did install 2 new room air conditioners, but STILL!

They put a new meter in and I'm waiting to find out the results of the testing of the old one- but I'm afraid it's not the meter.

17. I paid 135.00 this past month for a 2500 sq ft home
cooling it...I don't turn the a/c on unless it is sweltering, and at night all the windows are opened. The winter, now is a totall different story....it's twice that amount, because it's cold cold cold here and the heater runs constantly.
