I am DONE - FINISHED - With television "news"
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 06:46 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
That's it. I've had it. From now on I am going to get all my news from fark.com. The mainstream media has officially become a waste of time. CNN was just "analyzing" why Obama's lead in the polls isn't higher. No, really. They spent 10 minutes on it at least. Later, I expect Larry King to spend a full hour on UFOs, spirit mediums, Paris Hilton, and/or the latest feud on The View.

Even CNBC, supposedly a financial news channel, is so full of hot air that I can't watch that anymore either. True journalists have become so rare that I see better investigative reporting happening on Entertainment Tonight.

Where are the reports of dozens of innocent children being killed in Iraq on a daily basis? Where are the reports on the millions of people without health care, and the thousands that die each year because of it? Where is the incessant coverage of the Downing Street memo, the legalization of torture, the treasonous outing of a CIA agent, the hundreds upon hundreds of crimes committed by the president and the vice president of the United States?

All I see is "MSNBC, the place for politics!", or "CNN = Politics!"

Politics? Are you joking? They aren't talking about health care. They aren't talking about gun violence. They aren't talking about illegal war. They aren't talking about the economy. They aren't talking about global warming. They aren't talking about civil rights. They aren't talking about social security. They aren't talking about education. They aren't talking about election fraud.

They're talking about Obama being too thin, or too black, or too white, or too young, or too tall, or too well spoken, or too stupid, or too smart, or too this or too that or too the other. They're talking about polls. And polls. And polls.

And polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls.

And polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls and polls.

This is not politics. This is entertainment. This is a "horse race!" This is about ratings. They're not interested in informing the people about that which is truly important, because what is important is not what is exciting. But more so, what is important is not what is in their best interests.

An informed population is a liberal population. An informed population is capable of critical thought, and critical thought brings about higher taxes for the rich (them), regulation of industry, social programs for the less fortunate, GUN CONTROL, universal health care, gay marriage.

They don't want to pay higher taxes, they run the industries that they don't want regulated, they don't want to pay for welfare or social security or health care, and they want to continue to scare people with guns, gays, and "God". (I put that in quotes because their only God is their money).

Well I'm done. I'm not doing this anymore. Goodbye television "news". I am not going to watch this tabloid trash any longer. The marginal cost of wasting my time with this nonsense has officially exceeded the marginal benefit. I'd rather search for the proverbial needle in the proverbial haystack than attempt to find a genuinely informing and important story among the agglomeration of cecotropes that commonly pass off as "news" these days.

GOOD. BYE.

3. Smart move.
I gave up on corporate-owned news yesterday. It's pointless watching them fellate McCain, who IMHO, is the most vile and useless piece of shit the Republicans have ever run.

7. I quit a few months ago
I don't remember what the straw was, but I remember writing a post that I was watching Gunsmoke while everybody else was in an uproar over the distraction d'jour. I've had it too. It's a complete waste. So sad. If we had a decent media, most people would have avoided the mortgage fraud too. Not only does democracy depend on transparency, so does a growing economy.

8. I hear ya
Sometimes in patients rooms they'll have the news on. I have to bite my lips to not comment, and sometimes I just can't help it. It's disgusting.

9. You're part of a trend...
Albeit the early part.

I think many have given up on traditional sources of news as they have forsaken their role in our democracy.

10. If you get all your "News" from "fark.com" then I wonder why you've not searched out
other sites...since you've been here on DU to know there are many Dem/Progressive Dem sites out there you could read and get information from...with VIDEO!

Are you a whiner? A person who doesn't "seek alternatives?"

12. Good for you.
You do not need it. You are better able to think for yourself if you read different stories and make up your own mind without someone with a big agenda trying to tell, or yell at you, to think.

I gave it up in early to mid 2004 and have only watched the occasional special I wanted to see. My life is better and I am better able to wade through the crap that you inevitably have to hear from those that do watch.

It was hard, I was a total junkie.

14. I agree with your analysis, except it's not meant as entertainment, it's merely propaganda.
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 08:23 PM by Uncle Joe
They're purposely ignoring all the critical issues you mentioned because they're afraid Obama would win in a landslide. This is why they purposely dumb down the American People, and it works too, this how we got Bush.

This is also why they down play Obama's lead, as a brain washing attempt on the American People to stunt any potential momentum of him running away with the race.

This type of political coverage would be a natural symptom of any nation in the world where the so called free press is ranked 48th as to it's freedom, I believe Nicaragua's free press is ranked 47th.

I haven't watched them in almost five years except selectively, like KO, BBC and sometimes the local news for weather and I used to be a real CNN news junkie before selection 2000.
