I laughed when I heard the guys at Buffalo Chip tell the story, but then I thought about the conversation I had with Pearl Gulbranson, who was working at the Crisis Intervention Center for domestic abuse, which is located in a house across the street from the Broken Spoke. Gather 500,000 people in one spot, feed them a lot of alcohol and there are bound to be some serious problems.

"We average three or four 'contacts' a night," Gulbranson said. "And a lot of women get abandoned here. They get left behind with no way of getting home. So we're here to help."

"Sturgis motorcyclists" are more of a pretense. They no longer are people who ride/appreciate motorcycles, they are people who have the wealth to pretend to be motorcyclists on the weekend.

They buy the leathers and brand-name crap to show off to their bewildered co-workers on Monday.

But, these so-called "Sturgis motorcyclists" are a manufactured group of hair-plug-wearing, botox-injecting, spray-tan-sporting, viagra-dependent, wannabes and over-the-hill, nostalgic-for-an-adolescence-they-never-had has-beens in an extended late-life crisis denying the fact that they are no longer young enough to truly understand the culture that has long ago moved past them.

They were NOT to be trifled with, but Rick and I got to go to the bike races in Pittsburgh, Ca. once.

So there I am at 13 hanging around with the SF chapter of the Hells Angels....OK, being tolerated and ridiculed, drinking beer like I knew what I was doing, but still, it was the kind of street cred you couldn't buy in my shitty little mill town jr. high school.

Those guys, all "retired" into life sentences at Corchoran or San Quentin or overdoses or getting run over, wouldn't believe what Sturgis has become.

They wouldn't give it, or the wannabes the time of day.
