How can a country with only 3% of proven oil reserves and consumes half of the world's oil become more energy independent by drilling at home?

Granted, I'm pretty crappy at math, but I can't see how those geniuses protesting at the House keep making this point.

1. Considering you say you're not good at math.........
that's an astute, and accurate, observation!

3. They can't
They are lying. IT's politics. THe oil companies want a Republican president. BY throwing out made up crap about what more oil drilling will do, they are hoping to convince voters that they can solve all their problems with more drilling. I doubt the oil companies even want to drill more. They just want their tax breaks.

If the oil companies really wanted to drill, they would have already. The GOP controlled the HOuse and senate and PResidency for years and the oil companies didn't push for more drilling. Why? Because they didn't want to.

4. By selling it to China and Japan so that the CEO's of Shell and Mobil...
...can jack up their already obscene profit margins.

They have no interest at all of piping this in to the existing US pipelines. It's all about their bottom lines.

5. A few points
First of all "proven oil reserves" - does that include whatever oil might be under ANWR or on the Coastal Shelf? Do we know for sure how much is down there?

Secondly there's the distinction between how much we use and how much is out there. If we used 50% of the worlds total oil supply annually, well, we would have run out of oil a long time ago.

Not that those house members are right; rather this is a political stunt dedicated to humiliating Democrats, not getting more oil for the American people.

6. good point
Notice that the percentage favoring the energy company profit ballooning measure goes up as you move away from the coast. Sort of like McCain supporting nuclear energy but fighting the idea of planting the waste (or even moving it through) his home state of AZ.

It's always easier to favor destructive policies that don't rock your personal boat.

9. Also remember since we don't have nationalized oil
there is nothing to say that anyone of us will ever see a single drop of it.
