Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) compares Pelosi to Marie Antoinette |
|
http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/08/let_them_eathigher_energy_pric.html#moreRep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) took a major swipe at Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) when she compared the House Speaker to infamous French queen, Marie Antoinette. Like Antoinette, who said starving French peasants should eat cake if they had no bread, Foxx said Pelosi is thumbing her nose at the needs of American who can't afford the cost of gas. "That's not the kind of answer we expect," she told reporters at a press conference this morning.

The Repugs refused to allow a vote on selling oil from the strategic reserve, which would have done a lot more to help consumers.

4. I'm sure Marie Antoinette would have much preferred |
|
if impeachment was "on the table" for her, as opposed to her eventual fate.

6. It is pretty widely accepted now that Queen Marie Antoinette never said |
|
the oft-misattributed phrase.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in his 1783 autobiography Confessions, relates that "a great princess" is said to have advised, with regard to starving peasants, "S’ils n’ont plus de pain, qu’ils mangent de la brioche", commonly translated as "If they have no bread, let them eat cake". It has been speculated that he was actually referring to Maria Theresa of Spain, the wife of Louis XIV, or some other aristocrat. Vincent Cronin in his biography "Louis and Antoinette" states that the comment was made by Anne of Austria. In any event, the phrase was first printed in 1766, when Marie Antoinette was still a 10-year-old girl living in Hapsburg Austria.
