Pretrial motions and jury selection awaited Joel and Victoria Osteen this morning as they arrived in court to face a flight attendant who alleges that the wife of the evangelical superstar assaulted her on a plane in Houston in 2005.
Although he is not a party in the case, Joel Osteen stayed at his wife's side as they walked through the downtown Harris County civil courthouse and sat in court as attorneys spoke to prospective jurors. Opening statements are expected this afternoon after jurors have been chosen to hear Sharon Brown's lawsuit.
Brown says she lost her religious faith and suffered a hemorrhoidal flare-up after being thrown against a restroom door and elbowed in the chest during a confrontation with Victoria Osteen, co-pastor of Lakewood Church, on a Continental Airlines plane on Dec. 19, 2005.
Osteen's attorney, Rusty Hardin, and a church spokesman adamantly deny the allegations.
"It's absolutely insane," said Hardin.
Lawyers for both women have said airplane passengers and Continental employees will testify that it was the other woman who was out of control.
Pretrial motions centered on limiting what the jury will hear. Among other actions, state District Judge Patricia Hancock ruled that jurors will hear testimony about Brown's psychological condition and medical history.
