Mayor's Lawyer: Charge A 'Done Deal'

Last Update: 4:47 pm

DETROIT (AP/WXYZ) - An attorney for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says he has "credible information" that charges will be filed in connection with a bizarre incident on the Mayor's sister's porch.

James Parkman says that's why he has advised his client not to talk with state police investigators about the incident. "When you get this kind of information, that your client is about to be charged, or that he already has been charged, you don't talk," Parkman said.

State authorities are investigating allegations that Kilpatrick physically interfered with a sheriff's detective who was trying to serve a subpoena to the mayor's friend last month.

Parkman says the attorney general's office sought information from the mayor's legal team in a phone call Wednesday. He says co-counsel Jim Thomas declined because they believe a charge against the mayor is a "done deal."

Kilpatrick attorney: Charges coming
George Hunter / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- An attorney for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said Wednesday he has advised his client not to talk to state police investigators because he believes the attorney general is planning to charge the mayor with assault stemming from an alleged shoving incident last month.

James Parkman said he had "credible information" that leads him to believe charges against Kilpatrick are imminent.

"When you get this kind of information, that your client is about to be charged, or that he already has been charged, you don't talk," Parkman said. "You learn that the first day in law school."

Parkman also said he may waive Kilpatrick's Sept. 22 preliminary examination in the perjury case.
