What is John Edwards doing for a living?
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 09:05 AM by rucky
He's not an elected official.

He's not currently running for office.

He's either not working, or he's in the private sector.

3. So not working is an option.
The point is, we haven't entrusted him with the public good for quite a few years now. He's a private citizen, so what's the big deal?

10. I've been half-heartedly trying to make that same argument.
I suppose if he were a serious candidate for VP, this would be a big deal.

4. He used campaign funds to pay off his girl friend.
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 09:40 AM by TexasObserver
So your comments don't apply. He was a presidential candidate, he misused campaign funds, and he did so to pay personal expenses. That's illegal and a breach of his duty of trust, even if you don't think it is.

6. Is that verified?
I heard it mentioned downthread a few times, but haven't seen it as the focus of any reporting. I figured something like that would be in the lede of any decent reporting about this.

7. read the thread about the campaign lawyer, Barron
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 10:10 AM by TexasObserver
That was the shocker for me. There were major bundles of money moved from the campaign through him.

I wish it were not true, but it appears to be. This means a whole new level of subterfuge and breach of duty by John.

16. It appears he spent massive amounts of campaign cash inappropriately.
And since the source is the lawyer who was providing hundreds of thousands of dollars of "work" to the campaign, it really looks bad for Edwards.

19. I believe his girlfriend was part of the business that was doing the filming of his trip.
I'm not sure the money was for her. It was most likely just part of the payment to the company for doing the PR filming for his trip. These payments have been reported because they're fully available in the ledger sheets for the campaign, probably as indicated as payments to his girlfriend's legit firm doing the filming of the events that both she and JE were taking part in.

Am I wrong about that?

28. She was paid for making the movies.
Then, separately, she was paid by the lawyer, according to the lawyer, from the lawyer's funds.

22. I'm still in shock over it. This scheme/scam with Baron is really offensive.
They took campaign money, paid Baron, and thereby gave Baron the money to funnel cash to the girlfriend.

This is going to get much worse before it gets better.

26. The woman was also apparently paid separately
for making the documentary movies about Edwards. The lawyer also says he paid her to move (from his own funds). I am not sure how much money we are talking about with the lawyer, he didn't say (that I know of).

17. Edwards was a Trial Lawyer for a long time, and he was reportedly good at it.
I don't remember (probably never knew, really) the cases he had, but I remember one in particular that was a pool drain that pretty much eviscerated a little girl. They got a multi million dollar judgment on that (along with industry reforms that probably saved lives,) and the usual and customary fee on that kind of case is one third to the lawyers. Doesn't take too many of those to render a daily trip to the office unnecessary.

I don't know too may Product Liability Lawyers that are going hungry.
