43. Okay. Guess I stand corrected . . . to a degree.
But I don't get to live in Mass. I live in a state where a lot of people think that liberals are baby-killers and troop morale-destroyers . . . the list goes on and on, I assure you.

I expect our leaders to not use the term "liberal" in a derogatory sense. For any reason.

52. Exasperation, exactly, that's is what he seemed to be expressing
when I watched the video. Obey is very anti war. He felt he was being accused of not doing enough to stop the war, etc. There are rules in congress he can't do away with just because his party is in control. He was not about to keep the guys in Iraq now without what they needed to survive. That is what I got from it. Yes, he wants Out of there.

Again, I heard pure frustration with the battle he is fighting in congress, the repubs and some in his party.

Frankly, it's those folks who got him in the hall that look worse to me, and unfrotunately the media will probably use that as a broad brush....but I hope it brings Obey's efforts some much needed publicity.

I agree, and there's clearly a difference between smart liberals and idiot liberals
Just as there are reasonable conservatives, like Chuck Hagel, and batshit crazy conservatives, like Ann Coulter.

In the long run, he's probably done the liberal movement a service, by demonstrating that liberals do distinguish between positions and efforts that make sense and those that are just attention-seeking behavior to no useful effect. Some of us are actually PRACTICAL and TACTICAL, not windmill-tilting disruptors.

17. a rough transcript...
We're trying to use the supplemental to end the war but you cant end the war if your going against the supplemental. Its time that these idiot liberals understand that. Theres a hell of a difference between defunding the troops and ending the war. Im not going to deny body armor, Im not going to deny funding for veterans hospitals so you can help people who have medical problems, thats what you do if you go against that bill.

There should be enough money in the regular defense bill.

No there isnt.

20. The usual double-talk and CYA from a hack politician.
"There's not enough money in the defense budget.."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/04/AR2006020401179.html

Similarly, the budget will contain an increase of nearly 5 percent in the Pentagon's funding for next year, defense officials said. The $439.3 billion includes $84.2 billion for weapons systems, an 8 percent increase in weapons spending. The military budget reflects a subtle shift in Pentagon spending priorities from existing weapons toward research and development.

In addition, the White House is continuing a pattern of leaving substantial military expenditures out of the budget; last week, the Pentagon announced it intends to ask Congress for an additional $120 billion -- not contained in the new spending plan -- to help pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq this year and next.

Kinda like this subthread.

http://appropriations.house.gov/News/pr_070129.shtml

WASHINGTON - Today, Dave Obey (D-WI), Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, filed a $463.5 billion measure to complete work on last year’s appropriations bills. He co-wrote the measure with Robert C. Byrd (D-WV), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The House is expected to consider the measure on Wednesday.

Last year, the Republican leadership passed a budget so unrealistic they were unable to complete work on 9 of the 11 annual appropriations bills.

In December, Byrd and Obey announced a plan to wrap up the bills in a joint funding resolution. Under the measure filed today, most programs will continue to be funded at the 2006 levels adjusted for increased pay costs. Limited adjustments were made within the confines of the Republican budget resolution to meet critical needs including: meeting new needs in Veterans Healthcare and Defense Health programs; making significant investments in public housing; increasing funding for scientific research; and increasing the Labor, Health and Education bill to keep up with inflation, a promise the Republican leadership had made but never delivered.

The recent explosion in earmarks has left Congress unable to ensure the integrity of the system and public confidence is at an all time low. Obey and Byrd decided to place a moratorium on the practice until the new, reformed process is fully in place.

The joint resolution is free of earmarks. Title I, Section 112 states:

Any language specifying an earmark in a committee report or statement of managers accompanying an appropriations Act for fiscal year 2006 shall have no legal effect with respect to funds appropriated by this division.

This decision does not come without pain. Many worthwhile earmarks were cut including the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Points of Light Foundation, and America’s Promise. Hopefully, whatever short term pain this causes will be more than made up for in the long run.

“I don’t expect people to love this proposal, I don’t love this proposal, and we probably have made some wrong choices,” said Obey. “But in contrast to last year’s Congress, which decided to duck these choices, at least we have made them in order to bring last year’s issues to a conclusion so we can turn the page and deal with next year’s priorities.”

part of it and unfortunately Obey has bought into the wrongwing propaganda by denouncing the questioners as idiot Liberals. He used Liberal in a derogatory term not once but twice.

He really does try to explain his bill as being the solution to end the war and couldn't get it across. From what I heard from Pelosi yesterday, it does end the war but down the line. Obey was treating it as if it ended the war the moment it would be enacted. Unfortunately this is all moot when Shrub has veto power and there at this time would never be a 2/3 vote to override it.

By virtue of his position it should've been clear that he would be the sponsor of the Supp if they knew anything about appropriations. They really showed their ass on that one, and with the current approps work going on now at hellfire pace I'm not surprised he lit into them...if they had even looked at a copy of the bill they probably would've seen that he was the sponsor. "Uh, are you going to vote for the bill you're sponsporing?" Just ridiculous.

Personally I don't give a shit what South Park makes fun of, and if you knew their target audience it shouldn't bother you either.

53. You couldn't have come up with a cheaper (and more inaccurate) shot
if you tried.

First, you don't know shit about me, my family, or how many funerals of Iraq War dead I've attended.

But hey, way to go. You've done yourself proud. A few things are apparent. You not only haven't bothered to find out who those people were and why they were bothering the one guy on the Hill who was unequivocally on their side, you defend their stupidity (they clearly didn't bother to even read the supplemental) by attacking me.

What a prince!!!

The unidentified woman told Obey she was the mother of a Marine who had been deployed to Iraq who was experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder and wasn’t receiving adequate treatment from military hospitals. She then asked why Obey was not cutting off funding for the war.

Obey responded that the Washington Post has been running numerous stories on the inadequacies of military hospitals and that Congress is holding hearings on the topic, adding that the supplemental spending bill includes extra money for military healthcare.

A few moments later he grew angry and began attacking liberal groups for failing to understand how the supplemental bill, of which he is a sponsor, would affect the war.

“The liberal groups are jumping around without knowing what the hell is in the bill,” he bellowed. “You don’t have to cut off funds for an activity that doesn’t exist.”

“The language we have in the resolution ends the authority for the war,” he added. “It makes it illegal to proceed with the war. You don’t have to de-fund something if the war doesn’t exist.”

67. Did you watch the whole video?
At first he was considerate, trying to explain why he was doing what he was doing in a hallway conversation with someone he didn't know. He didn't need to try to explain to this person his position. He seemed to care, no matter who the person was asking the question. He cared or he would have done the usual blather most politicians use on people that are not influential. He was tell someone who had an injured or lost (?) son in this war. But when he was constantly accused of doing the wrong thing he explained and finally got exasperated/frustrated. Obey cares, not a politician running for president. He is representing the masses.

38. Democrats File Joint Funding Resolution for FY 2007

Congressman Obey Says "Idiot Liberals" Need to Support War Money

House Appropriations Chair David Obey (Dem., Wisc.) ran into woman in the hallway in Washington recently and ended up yelling at her and her friends, accusing them of "smoking something that's not legal" if they disagreed with him, and denouncing "idiot liberals."

The woman, Tina Richards, introduced herself to Obey as the mother of a Marine about to depart for his third tour of Iraq, and as someone who has tried to communicate with Obey but received no response. Then she…

Well, watch the video yourself. It may be depressing, but it's certainly entertaining (just like network television): http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/19392

Obey claims in this video that the only way to end the war is to fund it, because

I don't care what anyone else says, the Mother of a soldier doing his third term in Iraq deserves a hell of a lot respect, more than Obey was willing to give

more willing to listen if that crowd didn't pull their bullshit disruptive nonsense in the offices of working antiwar legislators.

Why doesn't the woman go see a few Republicans, and try to change their hearts?

Oh wait....that would be a HARD thing to do. Better to go beat up Murtha, Obey, and Pelosi.

he was swearing, rude and boorish to her. He yelled at her while she quietly asked him questions. Apparently he isn't a liberal like some suggest, he seems to find liberals pot smoking idiots. What an absolutely shameful appearance for a congressional rep.

71. Of course everyone is frustrated.
Young men and women are dying every day and each and every one of them have families and friends who are beyond frustration. Legislators trying to find a way out of this horrible mess and hitting a brick wall time after time...more frustration. Arguments here; who is doing enough, who is not, who is saying the wrong thing or the right thing.

DEEP BREATH.

Work The Problem. Write the angry letters to the people who are holding up the progress. Not to each other.

Peace.

was kind of an asshole. He was only talking to the woman for 60 seconds before he used the term "idiot liberals". Calling people idiots because they don't have the time to research and read every bill that's put before Congress is not conducive to gaining momentum.

Ok after a bit of research I have found that number one, Obey lied. He claimed in the video that he did not vote for the authorization to go to war. Here is his less than stellar voting record and in it you can see he voted yes on the Iraqi war resolution: EDIT: My mistake he did not vote for the war resolution, the one I was looking at was to go after the 9/11 perpetrators. He did not lie. Sorry folks my bad!

http://votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=H4320103

He's a moderate that leans slightly left. Here is my biggest issue relating to what he had to say to this woman. He berates "idiot liberals" for not knowing what is in the bill he is proposing. Yet in Oct of 2001, he felt the need to vote YES on the Patriot Act. A bill that was rushed through so fast that according to most Congressmen and Senators, they didn't have a chance to read it. Now how can he stand there and call people idiots for not knowing what is in a bill when he voted yes on a bill that he never had a chance to read in full? A bill that fundamentally dismantled many of our civil liberties. Smells like a bit of hypocrisy to me.

10/24/01 U.S.A Patriot Act vote: Yea

Now he did vote against re-authorization in 05' but the whole point is he's berating someone for not knowing what is in a bill and he originally voted yea on a bill that he didn't even know what was in it.

He also seems to be a pro-life voter and he voted for the marriage amendment to make marriage between a man and a woman. There are a number of other votes on his record that IMHO are questionable.
