US begins flying Georgian troops home from Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) — A senior U.S. military official says the Americans have begun flying Georgian troops home from Iraq after they requested help with transportation.

Georgia has called its 2,000 troops home from Iraq to help in the fighting against Russia in the breakaway province of South Ossetia and asked the U.S. military to help transport them.

The official says that the U.S. military has agreed to their request and "some flights have already begun."

4. The Georgians have already withdrawn from S. Ossetia, Chicken Little.

Car fare home isn't "transporting them into battle". :eyes:

7. Using military transport planes to transport combat troops is equal to car fare home, Einstein?
We will see.

5. Lets just assume the Russians pretty much control Georgia's airspace ....
in the area one of these 'U.S. transport planes' happens to be traveling through on it's way to drop these Georgian troops off. What will the Russians do? Shoot it down? Warn it not to enter the area? Escort it over the Russian border and take the troops as prisoners? This isn't good. If the U.S. must help get these guys back to their country they should drop them off at the border somewhere. I don't like the sound of this. Perfect setup for an 'incident' ...

6. Um
If we are carrying the Georgian troops home from Iraq . . . where are we going to land the plane? BBC World News is that AFTER Georgia said they would withdraw - Russia bombed the Georgian National Airport.

So lets say Russia doesn't control the airspace . . . um - where are we going to land the planes?

Okay - Now I'm being sarcastic and caustic but I'm frustrated by this stupidity.

8. It's probably safe to say
that we flew them from Georgia to Iraq. Probably part of a deal where they supply some troops and we supply everything else.

9. Expect Another War Of Attrition
I see a new Chechnya developing here...the Russian military is far superior to the Georgians in a conventional war, but not in one fought from "the hills". This morning I heard a Russian foreign minister frame this as the Russians going in to protect their bretheren...who do dominate the South Ossetsia region as well as the coastal Abkazia area...and that the ultimate aim would be to replace the regime in T'blisi with a puppet and be on its way. When the war shifts from jet fighters and tanks to car bombs and guerilla tactics, this conflict could simmer for years...and all under the media radar. Another ugly war, thousands killed and the world moves along.

The U.S. squandered opportunities in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union to truly help these countries by helping them build strong economies and democracies...instead seeing profit in peddling military goods and trying to get their hands on the same oil the Russians believe is theirs.

The Europeans appear to be sitting on their hands as well...and this is very telling considering they have a lot more vested in a resurgent Russian threat. Maybe they see a war of attrition as well and, as is the case with the U.S. in Iraq, best to keep these military powers drawn into these small, dirty wars that drains them of resources and can be profitable for them in the long run.
