Media Salivate Over Edwards' Affair; Shrug Shoulders Over McCain's Alleged Infidelity

<snip>Many people, especially in the press, jumped to defend McCain against the evil New York Times on that one and there has been no follow up. But considering how everyone is excusing the flogging of this Edwards story on the basis of the fact that he lied to the press, I'm not sure it's in the country's best interest not to ask McCain about this again and talk to the women herself. What if it comes out that it was true after he's president? Why surely the press will be as honor bound to obsess over it as they were about Clinton and now Edwards, right? It's not about the sex -- it's about the lying, remember? (They've been saying on a loop that John Edwards was a breath away from the presidency, after all and he got about four delegates.)

I personally don't care who any of these people are sleeping with (especially McCain). Marriage is a very complicated institution and I don't pass judgment on how others conduct theirs. I think this is all bullshit. But if the media has decided that even a failed politician who has no chance at the presidency can be subject to this kind of scrutiny, then they need to be a little bit more vigilant about pursuing someone who is the nominee of his party and has been very publicly linked to a specific woman by the paper of record, not the National Enquirer. If these are the rules, then this guy is a far more likely subject of scrutiny than Edwards.

2. Well, Straight-Talkin' Johnny Maverick denied it
So that's all there is to it. Of course, Edwards denied the initial reports, but those bulldogs of the Fourth Estate kept after it. That's because Edwards doesn't serve up barbecue to the reporters. But it's not like you can just buy off reporters with barbecue. You gotta serve liquor, too.

7. For McCain it was about the motives of the person that exposed it.
McCain's fidelity was never questioned. I feel every day like it is time for a media revolution, tear down the wall.

8. The Iseman/McCain Affair Screwed Many People
...even if sex wasn't involved. The lady was a lobbyist whose clients paid big bucks for the "access" to Gramps and a "helping and" that helped them get billions in "deregulation", tax breaks and other perks. Even if there wasn't sex (and c'mon the dude's 71...is there anything left??) she sure made sure her Johnny was taken care of with all sorts of other "benefits" (money).

Thanks to DUer MagickMuffin for providing this list of Iseman clients:

Remember, it was Gramps own people who termed their relationship as "inappropriate". And we still haven't found out why.

13. When I think of what could possibly have been going through Edward's mind,
when he thought he could have an affair, pay her, etc. and think it would not be found out, this is the only thing I can think of.

Think about the media and Bush. They were startlingly uncurious about a guy who never had a successful business, went AWOL, took vast quantities of drugs, had a wife who committed vehicular homicide and walked away, and was a figurehead governor whose greatest thrill seemed to come from signing death warrants. Maybe Edwards looked at that and thought the same thing would happen to him. He made the fatal flaw of not only doing something stupid he was SWD, Stupid While Democrat.
