Sen. Stevens Scored Big In Florida Condo Deal, Prosecutors Allege
Andrew Tilghman - August 15, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/sen_stevens_scored_big.php

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) flipped a Florida condo deal to turn $5,000 into about $100,000 back in 2001 when the housing boom was heating up, according to newly filed court documents.

Federal prosecutors are not charging the sitting senator with any additional crimes, but they are laying out the new allegations in an effort to show a pattern of lying on his Senate financial disclosure reports.

Prosecutors say the details of Stevens' deal amount to an interest-free loan that he should have publicly disclosed.

The Anchorage Daily News first reported the details on Stevens' deal this morning: .....

Prosecutors reveal more in Stevens case
FILINGS: Prosecutors allege senator used inside help to profit from Florida condo.
By RICHARD MAUER - August 15th, 2008 11:03 AM

Federal prosecutors offered a glimpse of previously unseen evidence against U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens in new court filings Thursday, including allegations that Stevens used insider help to turn a secret $5,000 investment in a Florida condo development into more than $100,000 in quick profits.

The government also dismissed assertions by Stevens that his conduct was shielded by the constitution as a member of Congress, citing nine examples of Stevens' "errands" and requests involving Veco that had nothing to do with protected lawmaking.

Among them: an intercepted telephone call in which Stevens discusses how his son Ben, then the state Senate President, planned to push a bill favored by the oil industry as a prelude to gas development.

The new filings go substantially further than the indictment handed up against Stevens last month charging him with seven counts of failing to disclose gifts ............

.......By 2005, Lily Stevens needed a new car, the government said in its filing Thursday. So Stevens returned to the original source: Allen.

"Allen offered to get Stevens' daughter a new car in exchange for the 1999 Land Rover, and Stevens agreed," the government said.

This time, the SUV would be a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. The deal was made between Stevens' daughter and a Veco employee "for the purpose of hiding Allen's involvement in the transaction." Allen wrote a personal check .......

Ted Stevens Talked To Grand Jury Witness: Feds
Andrew Tilghman - August 15, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/ted_stevens_talked_to_grand_ju.php

Here's another interesting email federal prosecutors found when they were sifting through Sen. Ted Stevens' files.

Stevens (R-AK) was writing to a friend described here only as "Person A," who was slated to appear before a grand jury.

This is how the scenario is spelled out in court documents filed last night:

By mid-May 2007, Stevens learned that Person A had been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in D.C. On May 17, 2007, Stevens sent Person A two emails that discussed Person A's upcoming grand jury testimony. In the first email, Stevens told Person A that "I hope we can work something out to make sure you aren't led astray on this occasion."

In the second, Stevens was more explicit: "don't answer questions you don't KNOW the answers to."

Feds List Favors Stevens Allegedly Did For Oil Firm
By Andrew Tilghman - August 15, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/feds_list_favors_sen_stevens_a.php

Federal prosecutors have never tried to say Sen. Ted Stevens provided any illegal favors to VECO, the Alaska-based oil and gas company that helped renovate his home.

Rather, the senator's indictment charges only that he accepted gifts from the company and failed to disclose them in Senate financial reports.

But in new court filings last night, the feds laid out evidence from wiretaps and seized emails to show in detail some favors Stevens allegedly did for the company. Prosecutors made the disclosure in a motion seeking to introduce the information at Stevens' trial set for September.

One of those alleged favors concerns a proposed pipeline that VECO hoped the state and federal governments would approve. ..............

7. HILARIOUS: Feds: Ted Stevens accepted free generator before Y2K

Feds: Ted Stevens accepted free generator before Y2K
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/08/feds-ted-steven.html

Remember Y2K? Well, a new court filing from the federal government suggests that Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, was one of the people who was concerned that the transition from "99" to "00" would wreak havoc on the nation's electric grid.

In a document that prosecutors filed yesterday in federal court, the government describes an unusual gift:

In 1999, Stevens asked Bill Allen to purchase and install a backup electric generator at the Girdwood Residence. The United States will prove this through, among other evidence, an October 10, 1999 email written by Stevens to a personal friend, in which Stevens wrote:

"Incidentally, I asked Bill Allen to hook up a generator to our chalet for Y2K – JUST IN CASE!!"

Allen and VECO thereafter purchased and installed a backup electric generator at Stevens’ request. Stevens never reimbursed Allen ....

Stevens says. "It's not bribery; it's not some corruption; it's not some extreme felony."
