McCain cites de-bunked Right WIng Propaganda story on 'evil' question:
McCain cites questionable story on 'evil'

A reader points out that John McCain's example of pure evil yesterday rests on a story asserted by Iraqi officials, but since cast into doubt.

"Not long ago in Baghdad, Al Qaeda took two young women who were mentally disabled and put suicide vests on them, sent them intto a marketplace, and by remote control, detonated those suicide vests," McCain told Rick Warren. "If that isn't evil, you have to tell me what is."

The horrifying story that terrorists used two women with Down Syndrome to carry bombs was a sensation in February, but the New York Times later suggested it hadn't happened that way:

Psychiatric case files of two female suicide bombers who killed nearly 100 people in Baghdad this month show that they suffered from depression and schizophrenia but do not contain information indicating they had Down syndrome, American officials said Wednesday.

1. So that makes it all right?
I'm afraid I don't regard the details of the mental health problems these women had as relevant to whether or not having them kill themselves, and a hundred other people, was evil.

3. "Lying"?
John McCain quoted the more widely-held of two similar but conflicting versions of a story. Even the OP - although it has the attention-grabbing "debunked" in the title - actually just claims "The Ney York Times later suggested it didn't happen that way".

Even if he turns out to have been wrong, that's hardly "lying".

I'm afraid I view this as a non-issue.

4. Someone Questioned His POW Story
A caller on Washington Journal cited that the episode of a guard making a cross in the dirt was similar to a scene from Ben Hur. But then Gramps also somehow memorized the defensive front four of the Pittsburgh Steelers nearly a decade before they played and was listening to Abba in the 60's despite their first record being released in 1974.

Gramps exagerating? Lying? C'mon...give him slack, he's a Prisoner of his own war now.
