Maddow's Show to be Called...The Rachel Maddow Show

MSNBC sent out the release on yesterday's news, that Rachel Maddow would be getting her own show on the network. Calling it "a smart look at politics, pop culture and all the day's top stories," the show will air at 9pmET replacing Verdict with Dan Abrams. Insiders tell us the staff of the Abrams show will stay on to produce Maddow and that prime time VP Bill Wolff will run the show. Wolff's relationship with Maddow goes back to his days as the EP of The Situation with Tucker Carlson on which Maddow was a regular guest.

Maddow, who had a successful 9-day fill-in gig on Countdown in July, was on with Keith Olbermann last night talking about the new show, which at the time, didn't have a name: "The Rachel Maddow Show is taken. It's on Air America," she said, speaking of her nightly radio show, which will continue. Apparently, the name became available.

"THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW" LAUNCHES SEPT. 8 ON MSNBC

NEW YORK - Aug. 20, 2008 - "The Rachel Maddow Show," a smart look at politics, pop culture and all the day's top stories, will premiere Monday, Sept. 8, on MSNBC, it was announced today by Phil Griffin, President, MSNBC. "The Rachel Maddow Show" will telecast weekdays, 9-10 p.m. ET.

"Rachel is unbelievably talented and brilliant; her breadth and depth of knowledge of politics and news is astonishing and I'm so excited to give her a place to really showcase what she can do," said Griffin. "We've established MSNBC as the place for politics and the destination for viewers who want the smartest take on the day's developments. Adding Rachel into our primetime lineup makes perfect sense."

"I've loved working with MSNBC, and being asked to host my own show is an amazing opportunity," said Maddow. "I can't wait to get started."

Dan Abrams, currently the host of "Verdict," will remain Chief Legal Correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC; he will be expanding his role contributing to "Dateline" and "Today" and will also serve as an anchor on MSNBC during the day.

"When Dan served as General Manager, he really laid the groundwork for MSNBC's success today, with ratings growing 62 percent under his watch. Dan helped establish MSNBC as the place for politics, launched our political "Super Tuesday" coverage and was vital in positioning the network for its current success," said Griffin. "Dan is the best legal analyst in the business. Our primetime focus is now politics, so this move will enable Dan to focus on what he does best."

"Putting my G.M. hat back on, I think this is absolutely the right call. I look forward to my future success at NBC News," said Abrams.

"The Rachel Maddow Show" will feature Maddow's take on the biggest stories of the day, political and otherwise, including lively debate with guests from all sides of the issues, in-depth analysis and stories no other shows in cable news will cover. Maddow will also continue to host "The Rachel Maddow Show" on Air America at 6 p.m. ET.

In January of 2008, Maddow was named an MSNBC political analyst; she is a regular panelist on MSNBC's "Race for the White House with David Gregory" and a frequent contributor on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." She has been the regular guest host for "Countdown," has filled in for David Gregory on "Race," and has been a regular panelist on MSNBC's 2008 election coverage.

Maddow has worked with Air America Radio since its inception in the spring of 2004. Prior to joining AAR she worked for WRNX in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and WRSI in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Maddow received a bachelor's degree in public policy from Stanford University. She earned her doctorate in political science at Oxford University, which she attended on a Rhodes Scholarship. She is currently working on a book on the changing role of the military in U.S. politics, due out next year. She lives in New York City and Massachusetts with her partner, artist Susan Mikula.

2. Not so fast. There is a process here.
First it should be called "The O'Maddow Factor." Then, after a year or so, it gets changed to The Rachel Maddow Show.

Give that Mensa member a raise!

I'm sorry, but that name is boring.

4. Thought they couldn't use that name

since it's the title of her AAR show? That's what Maddow said last night on KO anyway. Not very original:shrug:

And I liked Dan Abrams and his show :-(

6. Dan Abrams should get the 6 p.m. timeslot.
And as soon as possible. In fact, just cancel RTTWH and replace it with "Verdict."

11. Dan's show was my favorite show -
Dan's show did it's damnest to at least have all POV's represented when it came to political topics. Dan may have had his perspective on an issue but he allowed everyone to chime in and he tended to control the flow to where no-one could steamroll over another guest.

Keith's show has its momemts but there are times where Keith is just a less abrasive left POV version of Bill O'Reilly. I'm a left-leaning moderate but I have to fess up that hearing one POV over 60 minutes tends to drain after a while.

I've liked Rachel's appearances on the various other MSNBC programs so I'll be tuned in for her show to see how it shapes up.

23. I liked what I saw of Dan's show
Second how you feel (sometimes) about being part of a left-wing echo chamber, however entertaining, when I'm watching KO.

Thing is, I've never felt that way listening to Rachel. While she doesn't pretend to be interested in presenting a balanced, panel-type setting for alternative views, what she DOES do is bring on genuinely well-informed folks who don't always have a political ax to grind.

I think if she just follows her instincts and presents a clear-headed TV show that allows her occasionally goofy humor AND her seriousness about US foreign policy and security issues a proper airing, she'll do very well.

5. Dan Abrams
I feel bad for Dan in all this. He was doing a decent job with his show, and lots of great expose reporting, esp on the Gov. Seigelmann case.

Dan's show may have been the main reason Seigelmann escaped from his political imprisonment in the first place. Dan latched on that like a dog with a bone.

I hope Dan still keeps on at MSNBC.

I am happy for both Rachel and all the "high information" liberal voters everywhere.

22. Dan didn't get shafted by MSNBC
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 01:51 PM by Arnold Judas Rimmer
Rachel was just talking about this on Thom Hartmann's show. Dan is moving up, more or less, on to projects for NBC network news, and he'll still be involved with MSNBC as well. So it seems like a win-win for everyone.

If it were up to me though, I'd give Abrams "Race for the White House" and fire that hack Gregory.

As far as the name of Rachel's show goes... they have to call it something to put it on the schedule, don't they? Abrams' show wasn't called "Verdict" right away, was it? So I'm sure Rachel is still taking suggestions for names for the show, like she said on Countdown last night.

24. Is Abrams not the General Manager anymore?
I assumed he voluntarily gave up the spot so he could concentrate more on the behind the scenes work.

It looks like they cut a deal.

"The Rachel Maddow Show" is a safe choice.

16. I can't help feeling Rachel Maddow has an incredible future
Sure, anybody in our overheated culture can run too fast and crash out -- but the feeling I have about her is that 30 years from now she'll be Walter Conkite, at the very minimum. Right now, she's mostly just smart and funny, but in the long run this lady is going to make history and will be a national icon.

(Meet back here 30 years from now to see if I was right?)

25. Good choice. I was hoping for "Rachel Maddow" but this is

good enough. We don't need any cute marketing names making people wonder what the show is about. This way people will just repeat Rachel Maddow over and over. yes.

You go Rachel! :bounce:
