Wow.

FAA Network Failure Delays Flights Nationwide

NEW YORK (AP) ― The Federal Aviation Administration says a communication failure at its Georgia facility that processes flight plans is causing delays across the U.S.

The Federal Aviation Administration says they are re-routing flight information from their Georgia site to another location.

There are approximately 5,000 planes currently airborne and in holding patterns, according to CNN. There are no reports that any flights are in danger.

Otherwise, sounds good.

46. KC

He was in Kansas City last night, and if he stayed in that general area, that's about an eight to nine-hour drive to Denver on I-70 - - the width of Kansas and about half the width of Colorado. I-70 all the way.

I don't think this will be a problem, for any hatters out there.

Of course it is. This is all some grand scheme to prevent Obama from getting to Denver - - those IN CHARGE have the wherewithal and the willpower to disrupt the nation's entire air traffic control system just to mess with the Democratic Convention.

41. No surprise to me.
The FAA is run by the same inept administration as FEMA etc. Was only a matter of time before their evil touch trickled down and the regular people that DO their jobs couldn't stop it from breaking.

After having flown 4 times in the last couple weeks I'm surprised planes aren't dropping out of the sky right and left between the FAA and the airlines trying to skimp to save money for fuel.

UPDATE 2-Air traffic delayed at U.S. airports - FAA site
Tue Aug 26, 2008 3:46pm EDT

(Adds that safety not affected)

WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Air traffic at more than two dozen major airports across the United States was delayed on Tuesday afternoon due to a communications network problem, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's website.

The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment, referring calls to the FAA.

CNN said air safety was not affected and the FAA has not lost contact with any of the 5,825 flights in the air.

The computer glitch occurred at an FAA facility south of Atlanta, CNN reported.

51. I wonder if they ever got
modern computers at the FAA?

Back in 1968, some genius in the government said, "Lease a computer? Hell no! We'll buy them and then we'll own them and save lots of money." In 1968 computers -- or at least the ones the FAA bought, so I understand -- still used vacuum tubes. (As I type this, I'm feeling a little skeptical about the vacuum tubes, but probably someone here will be able to correct me on this.) And so, the technology did not get updated, the way it did in every other business that had the good sense to lease computers at the time, and get the updated equipment and software in a timely manner.

I'm sure that they do have some newer computers now, but equally sure that they don't have the most modern, best, and fastest, which is what they need for the country's air traffic control system.
