4. Miss them both
Molly would have had a lot to say about the similarities between the Bush she warned us about before the 2000 election and candidate McCain of the 2008 election. I miss her voice every day. Anne would have given a great speech at the DNC I am sure, had she been still with us.

6. I look at them here and just start to cry, they deserved to see this
they and so many others who fought so hard to stem the tide of Reich-wing oppression and thievery, they all should be here with us tonight. To celebrate this amazing chapter in history that we are a part of.

One of the first pundit books I ever bought was by Molly (Molly Ivins Can't Say That, Can She). It sits in my bookcase, untouched since her death. I will probably pick it up and read it this weekend.

10. DB
I think I have pretty much every book Molly has written. Thanks to "Shrub" (coauthored with Lou Dubose), I knew well before the 2000 election that Bush would be the disaster for our country that he of course turned out to be. Molly certainly was an excellent judge of character and had Bush pegged to a T.

5. I really, really miss Molly Ivins.

Both were phenomenal people, but Molly Ivins really had a impact on my appreciation of politics. My views are a lot more hopeful and less fatalistic because of her wit and humor.

13. She had a way of writing and speaking that was different than other oped writers
It got her fired from the NYT I think it was but it spoke to the common man. Explained to them just how Bush was screwing them and they didn't even know it. She was a gem.

8. Was it Molly Ivins who said that Pat Buchanan's 1992 RNC speech
probably sounded better in the original German?

And Ann Richards "Poor George Bush...born with a silver foot in his mouth"

They were great women. RIP.

9. YES, she had him pegged 16 years ago
In the 1990s liberal anger about Buchanan’s “right-wing” fascism reached a fever pitch. As Molly Ivins wrote in response to Buchanan’s 1992 Republican National Convention speech: “It probably sounded better in the original German.” The irony here is that Buchanan was actually moving to the left. For years Buchanan’s opponents called him a crypto-Nazi for his defense of Ronald Reagan and the GOP. In reality, the only thing that kept his fascist instincts in check was his loyalty to the GOP and the conservative movement. After Reagan and the Cold War, Buchanan abandoned both in a leftward search for his true principles.

Buchanan calls himself a “paleoconservative,” but in truth he’s a neo-progressive. During the 2000 election he denounced free marketeers and flat taxers, saying that they spent too much time with “the boys down at the yacht basin.” He came out in favor of capping executive pay, in support of higher unemployment benefits, and against any kind of free-market Medicare reform and backed a “Third Way” approach to government activism. Buchanan’s neo-Progressivism has even caused the onetime Reagan aide to rail against the social Darwinism of the free market.

11. I have my Ann Richards Fan right above my desk...
A friend who does a lot of events in Austin got it at funeral and sent it to me. She would have been so happy to have seen last night. I wish she could have been there to speak last night. I'd have loved to have read Molly's commentaries about this entire campaign so far. She always saw things others overlooked.

I thought about them both the other day when a DU'er complained about Gov. Schweitzer using redneck cornpone terms in his speeches. I guess that poster wouldn't have liked this speech....

Here's also a great Ann video tribute. Get yr Kleenex ready.
