5. There is always the slim fantansy that the 25th amendment could be invoked |
|
Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

get your point and I don't disagree with it. Biden clearly has the chops to step into the number one position. Palin? Eh, no, not at all.
But sadly heart attacks do not afflict only old men. I knew a healthy, active, well educated youg woman with a good career who did not smoke or drink or do drugs. She had a massive heart attack and was found dead in her home before she reached the grand old age of 30. Her father died of a heart attack in his mid 40's and her younger sister had a major stroke in her 20s. Very sad.
I really think we would do better to speak of candidates health being an issue rather than their age. Why? First, anyone of any age can experience tragedy and die from a sudden illness or accident. Second, it is something less than progressive IMHO to judge another because of their race or gender or nationality or religious faith (or lack therof) - or their age.
Just sayin....

Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 12:14 PM by GliderGuider
Sarah Palin is probably the greatest threat to your nation since ... well, since Bush/Cheney. They're using a double stalking horse here. McCain is the stalking horse for Palin, who in turn is the stalking horse for the men in the shadows.
This is deadly serious stuff. Sarah Palin's selection is a glimpse of the end-game. Nobody should be joking about Sarah Palin. People should be panicking.

24. OK, maybe "panic" is the wrong response |

but joking about her misses the deadly serious nature of the event. This needs to be a wakeup call.
I'm a Canuck too, BTW -- I said "your nation" because I was addressing the predominantly American readership of DU as an outsider.

That really says it all! :)
Actually, the untimely deaths of Rep. Tubbs-Jones and Tim Russert should serve as a great big warning flag about just how dangerous it is to vote for McCain.

You don't have to have recovered from cancer, be suffering from a terminal illness or have a pre-existing condition to be struck down suddenly.
It happened to Russert. It happened to Tubbs-Jones.
It could happen to McCain.
Putting aside his advanced age and pre-existing condition, his choice for second in command is simply too important to be handed to a complete neophyte like Palin.
We have recent, high-profile reminders of this fact of life.
In choosing her, he has neutralized the experience argument against Obama and accentuated the judgment argument against himself.

23. I have been trying to find info on this woman |
|
and she friggin scares me. next thing you know i'll be chained to my kitchen and forced to have a house full of kids!! god help me, i fear the idea of mccain/palin more than i ever feared the idea of mccain all by himself. considering his health issues.... the idea that this woman with NO experience in any capacity could be running two wars and in charge of our economy scares the crap out of me!! I would love to have a woman president, but there were a lot of women available to pick for mccain who had some experience and would have been better for the job.
