If you are in Gustav's path, move
We only had to deal with 36 hours of rain and the damage to infrastructure in Jamaica is unbelievable.
We had no damage but still have no power at home. We should be 'powered-up' later today.
This storm has unbelievable amounts of heavy rain.

2. The cone of uncertainty covers about 350 miles.
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 02:09 PM by Lisa0825
If I were right in the bullseye, sure I'd leave now, but within the cone, things can change a lot. Do you remember when Rita was supposed to give Houston/Galveston a direct hit? It ended up hitting about 120 miles to the east.

edit to add: I'm glad you rode it out OK!

18. It's actually 211 down here
I don't know if the numbers differ from region to region, but people in SE Texas and Louisiana are to call 211 for evacuation help.

I'm glad you're safe malaise. The models are looking more favorable for my area, but less so for Eastern LA and points further east.

7. So glad to hear from you
Happy to hear that you only lost power.

It was supposed to be north of you guys and then it took such a dip south. That is why it is so important that we all pay attention to the most recent updates.

I really feel bad for the people of New Orleans. I was just there for business in July and there is still so much devestation that has not been dealt with.

Thank you for posting that you made it safely, so many were wondering and praying for you and yours.

9. Glad you are okay.
You are right. Gustav is extremely dangerous. And people should also realise that you do not have to get a direct hit to suffer serious damage. Many in Jamaica were not too worried about Gustav because it was still a Tropical Storm. But the rain and the wind Thursday night really shocked people. The flooding and landslides really caused problems.

The death toll here in Jamaica is estimated at 11 so far. Anybody in this hurricane's way needs to get out now. If you are in a low lying area, you must leave. The wind will be one thing but the rains will be unbelievable.

10. Welcome to DU, dendrobium
:hi:

I just saw some pictures of Kingston on the WeatherChannel. My goodness. They showed a main bridge from Kingston just totally destroyed.

Yes, you cannot underestimate these storms.

Glad you are okay and welcome to our DU family.

11. That's the Harbour View bridge
split in two. Two bridges were destroyed but the HV one is the main entrance to Kingston from the most Eastern parish. The alternative road has unbelievable debris.
When you neglect infrastructure these things happen; when you allow limestone mining in the hills tehse things happen; when you destroy the environment with bad policies these things happen. Expect an inflow of parasitic capitalists...more Shock Therapy.

16. Well Fay sure messed up Florida and other southern states
and it never reached hurricane status.
Gustav is packing unbelievable rain and the mainland will also have to deal with the wind. Get out of harm's way.
