13. I was born between TWO hurricanes!

:P

It's true!

The season was a busy one for the Northeastern United States. Hurricane Carol and Hurricane Edna followed nearly identical paths, brushing North Carolina's Outer Banks before striking New England; the two storms caused $500 million (1954 US dollars) in damages. Hurricane Hazel was the worst storm of the season, killing hundreds and causing $250 million (1954 USD) in damage in a long path from Haiti to Toronto.

First storm formed: June 24, 1954

Last storm dissipated: January 6, 1955

Hurricane Carol is the most destructive tropical cyclone to hit the northeast Atlantic states since the 1938 hurricane! Carol is the most destructive hurricane to strike Connecticut, Rhode Island, or southeastern Massachuttes since since the 1869 hurricane.

http://www.geocities.com/hurricanene/hurricanecarol.htm

Hurricane Carol - August 31, 1954.
WINDS: 100-mph (moving at 35-mph).
PRESSURE: 28.35 inches/960 mb.
STORM - SURGE: 8 - 13 feet above Mean Tide.

The frightening intensity of Hurricane Carol's storm surge in Rhode Island
is captured in this photograph of Westerly, Rhode Island. Buildings in the
center of the photo were floated off their foundations, while buildings in
the lower portion were swept completely away, only slabs and driveways remain
(Photo Rhode Island National Guard 9/54).

Giant waves crash against the second floor of oceanfront homes in Old Lyme,
Connecticut during Hurricane Carol in 1954. Tides along the eastern Connecticut
coast reached 8 feet above normal. Hurricane Carol killed 66 people, injured
several thousand, are left many locations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and
southeastern Massachusetts in shambles. (Photo NOAA Photo Library).

Hurricane Edna
Category 3 hurricane (SSHS)

Duration September 2—September 15
Intensity 120 mph (195 km/h) (1-min)

Main article: Hurricane Edna

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Atlantic_hurricane_season

Edna followed a very similar path to Carol brushing the Outer Banks before making landfall
on Cape Cod and striking Maine; both landfalls were as a Category 1. Hurricane Edna brought
more winds and heavy rain to New England, an area hit by Carol only 12 days before, causing
20 deaths and $40 million (1954 USD) in damage.

My fear is that it will cross the peninsula and head into the Gulf. (Naturally I fear that, since I live on the northern Gulf Coast.)

10. Yep.
We're having an ugly night down here in the Keys and I'm up watching the Weather Channel.

I thought we'd be dealing with that one later in the week, but now it looks to be going more north. Hannah looks pretty squirrely.

I'm not making light of the pending disasters that are ahead and I offer the most sincere wishes, comfort and support to all who are under the gun here...please be safe and may the fears be proved wrong.

:hi:

BTW...a DU'er set up a chat room for DU'ers...no need for any additional program...looks like a great place to bitch about WJ and other live events in real time.

The Labor Day Hurricane was the most intense hurricane known to have struck the United States, and it is one of the strongest recorded landfalls worldwide.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day_Hurricane

the greatest weather disaster ever to hit Long Island and New England struck in the form of a category 3 hurricane. Long Island, New York and New England were changed forever by the Long Island Express.
