even dying is costing more: Local funeral director to testify on survivor legislation

Local funeral director to testify on survivor legislation

A local funeral director will testify today in support of legislation that would increase the amount of money banks make immediately available to survivors of deceased account holders.

State House Bill 1931 would raise the dollar amount immediately accessible for funeral costs from $3,500 to $10,000, which could be paid to a family member or directly to a funeral home.

The change reflects the increase in funeral costs since the original cap was put in place in 1993.

Ted Beck, of Buch Funeral Home Inc. in Manheim, said the average funeral in Lancaster County costs $7,800 to $10,000.

Beck will testify today in Harrisburg during a public hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in support of the legislation that was introduced last fall by Rep. Tim Solobay, D-Washington.
