She is his pregnant teenage girlfriend who just happens to be the daughter of the woman who would be vice-president.

And then there is was the third member of this highly unusual trio, the man who is determined to become leader of the free world.

Quite what was going through the mind of John McCain when he encountered 17-year-old Bristol Palin and her lover Levi Johnson remains unclear.

But no-one could fault him for a convincing performance, despite the Republicans being resolutely and rather traditional in their family values.
