Jet Palin sold didn't sell on EBay - Was used for transporting prisoners majority of time
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 11:54 PM by RamboLiberal
When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sought to illustrate her frugality to delegates at the GOP convention Wednesday, she described how she disposed of a corporate jet acquired by her unpopular predecessor.

“That luxury jet was over the top,” Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. “I put it on eBay.”

Palin’s statement implied a sale of the plane through the online auction site revered for empowering millions of small entrepreneurs, and Palin’s spokeswoman, Maria Comella, insisted Thursday that the transaction occurred.

But the plane failed to sell on eBay. Instead, the plane, a 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II, was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur — about $300,000 less than a broker’s asking price, according to press accounts.

Also, while Palin characterized the plane as an extravagance of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, who arranged for its purchase in November 2005, the plane saw heavy use transporting Alaskan convicts, according to flight records and interviews with corrections officials.

Alaska does not have adequate prison capacity and contracts for space with a private facility near Phoenix. On Thursday, 24 percent of the 4,546 Alaskans in jail or in prison were serving their time at Arizona’s Red Rock Correctional Center, said Richard Schmitz, spokesman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.

In fairness the article does mention that state saved around $800+ per prisoner using U.S. Marshals.

2. Saves money by using the US Marshals....

This aspect might well be looked into. Alaska refuses to build enough prisons to house their own population of prisoners and so they ship them off to Arizona. So, what is the total cost for doing this and is ANY of that cost being picked up by the US Government (i.e. us taxpayers who don't live in Alaska)???

Sure, anyone can save money by doing something and letting someone else pick up part of the tab.

5. Apparently it is half the cost to keep them in Arizona
$110 a day in Alaska, half that in Arizona. Families though are pissed cause too far to visit.

6. this needs to be publicized
How outrageous that she claims she "sold" the jet on eBay. She depended on that line to bring her applause and she got it--I was watching the faces of the republican brainwashed after she said it. They looked like they were near the rapture.

She disgusts me to no end. Is there no end to her lies?

8. She DIDN'T lie.
She said she "put" the plane on Ebay, not "sold" the plane on Ebay. right up there with the levees were "topped" or "breached" or "shot to hell and the whole city is drowning" or "sex" versus "sexual relations".

So yeah, she lied but she didn't lie.

7. A jet built in 1985?
Hell, she didn't trust travelling on it.

It was OK to transport prisorers but,.............

I'm sure it was lovingly cared for except

Are Westwinds even in production anymore? I've never heard of them.

Lears have been made that long and they are still made
So are Falcons and Cessna Citations are a reputable company too

But, these days, if it isn't a Gulfstream it's an Off-Brand

Something about Caribou Barbie screams that she wants nothing off-brand
