Finally saw the McCain speech - he sounded kinda like Hillary or Gore
Nice to hear the Republicans sounding unabashedly liberal. McCain is gonna fight for the little people and feels that nobody should be invisible to the Government. The first part sounds like Gore in 2000 and the second part is straight from Hillary's campaign. Ironic too that one of the people speaking before him said McCain would be "ready on Day One".

McCain is apparently promising the same energy program as Obama and Hillary. Of course, it is Obama who is now using Hillary's "5 million new jobs" line. McCain wants the government to invest in, or promote, solar power, wind power, tidal power, but also (which is perhaps where he differs a little) nuclear power. That last part might not be very liberal, but isn't he promising to copy the French and the Germans in this regard?

McCain also seemed to promise the same labor program as Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich - a massive investment in retraining for unemployed workers. Wow, that sounds like a big increase in Government spending. I wonder where the money is gonna come from?

Of course, McCain felt short of true liberalism on the tax side. He did not promise to raise taxes on the rich. However, since Mondale went down in flames in 1984, most liberals have emphasized tax cuts. Both Hillary and Obama did.

Unfortunately after Cindy introduced him with the impossible standard - "he always tells the truth", McCain told several fibs. The obvious one, to me, is where McCain claimed, again, that Obama would "raise your taxes". As if there is no difference between
a) raising taxes for people making over $250,000 while cutting taxes for people making under $100,000 and
b) raising taxes for everybody

Bill Clinton spent 8 years "beating" Republicans by adopting their rhetoric, and unfortunately many of their policies. Bush has kinda done the same thing, claiming to be a "compassionate" conservative and he also promised a lot of liberal programs in 2004. Will the public be fooled again into voting for a rightwing extremist posing as a liberal populist and against a centrist who will be painted as an extreme liberal? Much of that depends on what the media does.

2. so there's even less difference in their rhetoric
and just like Bush, McCain is promising to "reach across party lines". In other words, he's a "uniter".

Or he plays one on TV before the election.
