I've just figured it out! Conservativism is a CULT!
If you've ever wondered how conservatives can continue to believe their talking points regardles of the obvious facts and logic which disprove them, then you're not alone...

I think I've finally found the answer:

They're a bunch of Kool Aid Drinkers! They're a cult..

According to wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult

1) People are put in physically or emotionally distressing situations;

You're all gonna die unless you vote Republican! And then you're goin' straight to hell!

2) Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized;

Got a headache?...we'll cut your taxes.. Can't afford a new car?..we'll cut your taxes. Kid failing school? We'll cut your taxes. Taxes too low? We'll cut your taxes...

3) They receive unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader;

Thank Gawd for Dubya...he's our hero...

4) They get a new identity based on the group;

We're Conservatives...thank God we're not lib-er-als...

5) They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives, and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled.

Home schooling, christian mega church complexes and compounds, FoxNews, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Mike Savage, the 700 Club...hell there's even a Christian satellite dish company known as the "Angel Network" so that you don't have to get mainstream news anymore.

1. Cults also control the media, they control the information ...
that members have access to.

2. Also, they are anti-American, because they don't believe in honoring our
laws, like the Constitution, and treaties we have signed like the Geneva Conventions. It actually makes them traitors and they should be tried for treason.

4. Few cults survive long after the charismatic figure kicks the bucket

and Reagan, their cult leader, hasn't been dead long enough. The men who have followed have either been relative midgets like Stupid, who needs a constant effort by admen to prop him up, or utterly unsympathetic thieves like Cheney and Norquist, who appear on camera as little as possible because they tend to remind people where the party has gone since Reagan did.

Bible Barbie might be the dying gasp of that cult's influence. I sincerely hope so, the last of the conventionally attractive thieves who have god's blessing to steal.

7. But then there is Scientology humming along fine long after the death
of founder Ron L. Hubbard. I personally hope that the GOP goes the way of the Whigs and conservatives found another party that actually puts the Constitution before party.

5. A well crafted Cult...starting to recruit in the early 1970's...
and honing their message during the Raygun years.

But, sadly part of the deal is to give your natural curiosity and your
determination not to be a hypocrite over to the devil.

8. This just occured to me too
do not do anything about global warming, teach creationism and not science, ban books, keep women the property of men, force unwanted pregnancies even when there has been rape and incest, limit creativity and independent thought.

The thing that is the tip-off for me is that when people get "religion" they mistake themselves for God and insist upon judging others and forcing the laws of this country to conform to their insanity.

read The Authoritarians.

OK, what’s this book about? It’s about what’s happened to the American government lately. It’s about the disastrous decisions that government has made. It’s about the corruption that rotted the Congress. It’s about how traditional conservatism has nearly been destroyed by authoritarianism. It’s about how the “Religious Right” teamed up with amoral authoritarian leaders to push its un-democratic agenda onto the country. It’s about the United States standing at the crossroads as the next federal election approaches.

“Well,” you might be thinking, “I don’t believe any of this is true.” Or maybe you’re thinking, “What else is new? I’ve believed this for years.” Why should a conservative, moderate, or liberal bother with this book? Why should any Republican, Independent, or Democrat click the “Introduction” link on this page?

Because if you do, you’ll begin an easy-ride journey through some relevant scientific studies I have done on authoritarian personalities--one that will take you a heck of a lot less time than the decades it took me. Those studies have a direct bearing on all the topics mentioned above. So if you think the first paragraph is a lot of hokum, or full of half-truths, I invite you to look at the research.

For example, take the following statement: “Once our government leaders and the authorities condemn the dangerous elements in our society, it will be the duty of every patriotic citizen to help stomp out the rot that is poisoning our country from within.” Sounds like something Hitler would say, right? Want to guess how many politicians, how many lawmakers in the United States agreed with it? Want to guess what they had in common?

I think it should be required reading for every one on this board. Chapter three says it all.
