I have a man andwife I know who hate Obama, I am going to be spending
the weekend with them. I know they hate Obama because she kept sending me all those emails in the early on about his muslim, background and hand on the Koran, and on and on and she believes those emails and thinks he is a plant of some kind from our enemies..

I don't know what comebacks to use, I don't want to be mean. I want to agree that we disagree, but I would like some talking points I might use to bring her over to her senses and see how real Obama and Biden are.

Thanks

3. OMG. i don't envy you.
i haven't been able to win anyone over to obama. my hairdresser actually told me she wouldn't vote for obama because he's black. this was tuesday. i'm still freaked out and don't know if i can ever go back to her again.

i do know several PUMAs who were thinking about voting for McCain until he picked Palin. that made them see the light and they'll now be voting for obama.

6. Michelle's first cousin once removed is a Rabbi in Chicago,
Rabbi Carpers Funnye and Barack's great uncle served in Europe with the U.S. Army and liberated a concentration camp. But they probably hate Jews as well.

You could ask them how can he be a Muslim and have a Christian preacher but that will just bring up Reverend Wright and then they will saw Obama hates America.

You could tell them that John McCain is the Manchurian candidate and he was brainwashed by the Viet Cong during his 5 years in captivity.

You could also point them to the National Enquirer that is coming out this week and reporting of Sarah Palin's affair with her husband's business partner. Tell them that it looks like Sarah is a swinger and a morally loose woman and maybe Trig is her baby with her lover.

And that Obama wouldn't cheat on Michelle (since they probably think she is an angry black woman).

Seriously, what are their issues? Are they doing well in this economy? Trust funds? Worth several million? Lots of homes they can't remember. No problems paying for health insurance, college, cars, house, retirement. In that case, they can afford to be Republicans. If not, what I say to people driving shabby cars with McCain stickers as I am parking my Mercedes with the Obama sticker - honey you don't look rich enough to be a Republican!

8. Just tell the truth
He's not a Muslim.

He only wants to raise taxes on corporations and the top 1% of the population.

Joe Biden is perfectly equipped to take over as President, given his 36 year history of working both sides of the aisle in the Senate.

John McCain voted against veterans on every vote.

John McCain was part of the Keating 5 (remember them?).

John McCain has never held a job that wasn't directly family-related (he even worked for his new father-in-law before the same father-in-law bought him a seat in Congress).

Tell them about how McCain cheated on his first wife, then ditched her and divorced her and married Cindy one month later.

More?

13. I would ask what the problem was...
is it because he is black, or is it because of mis-information. I have found that people are often unwilling to admit it is because of race, which leaves the door open to be able to dispel every piece of tripe they have picked up. I let the conversation take me wherever it goes, but try to remember that we are all products of our environment. A lot of the shit that is stored between our ears, we didn't put there.

15. No, I don't believe it is race. My white daughter is married
to a black man and they love my daughter. I think somehow they just believed all those emails that first circulated about his background...they are pretty religious, I think. I'm not, I mean I dont go for organized religion.

People often believe those bad bad emails - people are so damn gullible. They are afraid he is the biblical satan, I believe.

anything else. It's funny but when I have ordinary conversations I am amazed at how much stuff is stored in my head. I feel like a walking Obama Encyclopedia. I'm trying to ease a family member into reality. She really doesn't want to know. She says every time I go off on politics I scare the shit out of her. I have to find another way in, but I just can't let someone that I have the power to influence stay on the sidelines.

17. maybe you can try convincing them that being a Muslim is irrelevant...
I guess, it depends on what you gauge they believe more strongly: that all Muslims want to kill Americans or that Obama's a Muslim. If they can't believe that Obama's not a Muslim, no matter what you say, try eroding their belief in the "evil" nature of Muslims. Make Obama's supposed "Muslim-inity" irrelevant.

If neither works, then I got nothin' for you. Some people are just beyond rational thought and are lost in an eternal loop of circular logic and contradictory and just plain wrong beliefs. Where the only way to cure them is to have a Muslim save them from being hit by a car--and even then they'd probably spit on the guy and continue on their way.

You have to remember, though, the whole "Obama's a Muslim" thing is just a way for racists who don't want to vote for a black guy to have a reason that feeds their bigotry but yet is still acceptable in "polite" circles, so your dealing with people who would support lynchings, segregation, etc. (Hell, ask them those questions, but substitute "Muslim" for "black", and I guarantee they'll say that Muslims should be kept separate from "Americans", it's not a crime to torture "terrists" to death without a trial, etc.)

19. I tell you what
My mother was all set to dislike Biden intensely. Because she'd gotten an e-mail telling her that he was "pro-abortion".

I just calmly explained to her that almost no one is actually "pro-abortion" and that Biden most certainly wasn't. I said his position is actually similar to my own - personally not a choice he's comfortable with, but not in the least willing to make that choice for anyone else.

My mom said that's just how she feels, too.

We talked about not paying attention to those stupid e-mails, and about getting the information herself. (She's been reading a lot!)

I think your first best choice is to start with civil conversation and not get confrontational. Questions sources and why they're ready to believe them. Show them why those sources aren't dependable - because the information isn't true.

Just know your candidates and their positions. And be calm and persuasive. Remember that nothing will solidify someone's position more than getting them all defensive - give them room to change their minds without sacrificing their pride, you know?

Just because my friends don't agree on Obama certainly doesn't make me change my opinion of them as friends, as one responder suggested. But I want to open their eyes if I can...I don't like that lady Sara palin....palin is failin...ha ha...

25. Ask them if they've ever asked Obama to his face any of the things they believe about him.
If they say no, invite them to go to one of his campaign stops and ask him there.

Otherwise, invite them to go to http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/fightthesmearshome/">Obama's anti-smear web tube.

If they persist in believing, tell them all the rumors started on a joke site, Truthiness Encyclopedia, a site based on a joke started by comedian Stephen Colbert.

Rapid Response Playbook: 15 Counterpunches to the "90% Bush/Pork Barrel Palin" Convention

Here are fifteen clear, forceful statements Democrats and independents can use to to counterattack. And the themes that should never be far from the conscious mind are: Electing McCain's too risky. He's compromised himself. Palin's an extremist. And, same old same old.

The first time they bring up their feelings about Obama, graciously inform them that your views differ, and that it will be more pleasant to discuss other things. If they make an issue of it, go pick up your things, tell them that you'll talk to them after the election, and walk the hell out....
