I know you all know this about Iraq, but it seems worth a quick review |
|
The 'war' part was over years ago. We invaded (for bullshit reasons, but that's a whole **other* story) and routed the Iraqi Army. Then we disbanded them. Then we captured Saddam. Somewhere in the timeline of those specific events, the 'war' was over. Our army beat their army.
The rest of this has been nation building. And policing. And gang turf fights (kinda like in parts of many big US cities). And infrastructure repairs, and in some cases, new construction. It has been an occupation.
It has been many things.
War, per se, is not one of them.
When Johnny and his sidekick talk about 'war' and 'my friends, I will never surrender' he hopes to evoke the iconography of Audie Murphy or some Ernie Pyle-esque WWII GI with a four day stubble and a half smoked Lucky Strike in his mouth, his pot unstrapped and hanging loose. He intends to conjure up images of Rita Hayworth and catcalling guys at a USO show. Or a guy coming back from Viet Nam, with jungle rotted feet, hated by his country and spat upon by hippies.
And that's just bullshit.
He can't even define 'victory'.
This is pap and pablum to be fed to knuckle walkers, mouth breathers, and the willfully ignorant and those who court their votes.

1. The war is just beginning. |
|
We will be routed from Iraq just as we were from Vietnam. I won't be at all surprised if the timeline is similar.
