GOP Rep. Shelley Moore Capito rode in to office and three reelections on Bush's coattails (not mention her family name - she's the daughter of convected ex-GOP governor Arch Moore) She used to campaign with Dubya several times a year. Now she's running from him, having scrubbed her Web site of the oodles of images of the chimp.
The race has been highly competitive. Anne Barth, Sen. Robert C. Byrd's chief of staff has been campaigning hard and many political observers think she has a good shot at unseating rubber stamp Shelley.
The race is on the DCC list of red to blue seats.
Unfortunately, Barth filed to get into to it at the last moment and has a fundraising disadvantage.
And some are now trying to claim that Hillary's loss of the nomination will re-elect Shelley:
"The coattail problem is now Barth's, not Capito's," said Larry Sabato, one of the country's top political scientists and director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.
"Along with incumbency, the McCain victory margin in West Virginia ought to be enough to re-elect Capito."
Sabato believes Barth would have benefited if Hillary Clinton had been successful.
"Had Hillary Clinton received the Democratic nomination, I would have looked carefully at the Capito-Barth contest, and a toss-up rating would have been a live possibility," he said.Barth is a great candidate and will make a fine addition to our team in Congress.
