Call it Palin Payback.

After Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, her teenage pregnancy, and her high school boyfriend were run through the media wringer last week, Republicans are now pointing to Joe Biden's daughter, Ashley, to make the case, ostensibly, that no candidate has produced perfect children.

Republican sources have been circulating a 2002 news story (from the Tribune) that reported Ashley Biden was arrested for obstructing a police officer in Chicago in August 2002 after getting into a verbal spat with a cop in a late-night nightlife district. The charges were dropped after she apologized to the officer involved. Ashley Biden, then 21, was a Tulane University student at the time. She now works as a social worker in Delaware.

For the record, both John McCain and Barack Obama have said children of the candidates are off-limits. Someone may want to tell the purveyors of the Ashley Biden story or, for that matter, the owner of bristolpalin.com.

Of course, the daughters of the current president were once rather notorious for getting into late-night trouble. But they seemed to have grown out of that. The coverage of the Bush twins, however, serves as a reminder that no matter how hot things become on the trail, the heat gets turned up once the office is won.

4. If a candidate's family is a mess that doesn't live up to what the candidate claims....

It's important to know. The candidates will be judged on what their families are like. Republicans have always been big on that and they're not going to change just because McCain is pretending to. If Obama's daughters were older and pregnant, McCain would never step in and say kids are off limit.
