LEAHY: THIS "IS AN ABUSE OF POWER"
Comment Of Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.,
Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee,
On U.S. Attorney Firings
March 13, 2007

“The White House and the Attorney General have dodged Congress’s questions and ducked accountability as if they still were dealing with a rubberstamp Congress. They are discovering that those days are gone.

“I am outraged that the Attorney General was less than forthcoming with the Senate while under oath before the Judiciary Committee. It is deeply disturbing that this plan appears to have originated from high-ranking officials at the White House and executed in secret with a complicit Department of Justice.

“This is not how justice is served, nor is it how our system of checks and balances is designed to work. It is an abuse of power committed in secret to steer certain outcomes in our justice system, and then to dust over the tracks. The President of the United States and the Attorney General are responsible for setting the moral standard for this Administration. Apparently this matter does not bother them but it does bother me, and we will summon whoever we need in our hearings to get to the bottom of this.”

9. Alas, I fear all the Democrats will do is fume and rant...
express profound disappointment, and maybe threaten to propose a nonbinding resolution. Won't that just scare the bejeebus out of the Repukes? :eyes: What I know for sure is that the Democrats will continue to behave like civilized ladies and gentlemen, as if they were dealing with adversaries who play by the rules instead of with Repukes who will continue doing as they damn well please.

16. Business as usual.
The system will be protected. No rich white criminals will do any real time for their crimes.
The rantings and ravings are purely for public consumption----They make great video and sound clips for the foolish voters back home, but nothing of substance will change. The BigWig Democrats feed at the same trough as the Republicans.

For me, the last glimmer of hope was estinguished when the Democrats kneeled down before AIPAC last weekend and removed the Iran provisions from the spending bill. :(

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

8. Gonzales will resign first, and the White House will refuse to testify...
IMHO we are headed straight for a constitutional crisis.

There is no explaining the actions of the White House, and Gonzales and his staff, in this matter.

It is circle the wagons time, and try to run out the clock to get to campaign season and the end of Bush's term.

Hmmm, what a surprise.

There seems to be a pattern here. Sure hope that Congress recognizes it and does something about it before it's too late.

24. Summons? You will need Bush, Cheney & Rove. Monday, 3/26/07 works for me.
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 05:57 PM by Dr Fate
That should give you several days to get all you need together. Why wait for Bush to drum up a story or counter-scandal/distraction?

"...we will summon whoever we need in our hearings to get to the bottom of this.”

That's easy, Pat- you will need Bush, Cheney and Karl Rove.

Unless this is just more "outrage" in the form of internet text, that is.

Great words Leahy- now can you get those summons out ASAP?- summons of some people I have heard of?

28. Hm. According to my understanding of the Constitution
...specifically Article II Section 4, abuse of power falls under "high crimes and misdemeanors" -- an impeachable offense.

How about it, Senator Leahy? Enough yet?
