Refugees International latest report on Iraq refugees
Last week, U.S. Senators and the public alike were surprised to learn that the U.S. has only admitted 466 Iraqi refugees for resettlement during the last three years of the U.S. war in Iraq. A mere 202 Iraqis were resettled in 2006. These facts were revealed during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on "The Plight of Iraqi Refugees" organized by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA). Refugees International's president, Kenneth Bacon, also testified at the hearing and pointed out that two million Iraqis have fled Iraq and another 100,000 are fleeing every month. Refugees International considers this the fastest growing displacement crisis in the world and is calling for the U.S. to increase funding for refugee resettlement programs and to help provide assistance to Jordan, Syria and other host countries shouldering the burden of the refugee population.
