House Dems Showed Fundraising Clout Even in Slow August

August is usually one of the slower fundraising months for the political organizations that raise money for congressional campaigns. Congress usually takes a month-long recess and lots of potential donors are on vacation and unreachable. In this particular August, there was the added distraction of presidential politics, as the month ended with both major parties’ vice presidential running mate announcements and the four-day Democratic National Convention in Denver — with the Republican convention in St. Paul looming the first week of September.

...

And the figures reported by the committees underscore the fact that the Democrats will be able to spend heavily to influence many more contests that will their national Republican counterparts. The DCCC began September — the month when most general election campaigns began in earnest — with a hefty $54 million left to spend. That is about four times as much as the $14.4 million in cash on hand that the NRCC reported in its account as August ended. Neither the DCCC nor the NRCC reported any debt as September began, though it’s not uncommon for a party committee to borrow and go into debt late in the election cycle to finance more campaign activities.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)

• Total receipts, August 2008: $5.1 million

• Total receipts, year to date: $120.2 million

• Total disbursements, August 2008: $7.6 million

• Total disbursements, year to date: $67 million

• Cash-on-hand, August 31: $54 million

• Debts, August 31: $0

--VS--

National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC)

• Total receipts, August 2008: $3.4 million

• Total receipts, year to date: $93 million

• Total disbursements, August 2008: $3.3 million

• Total disbursements, year to date: $79.4 million

• Cash-on-hand, August 31: $14.4 million

• Debts, August 31: $0
