Rove lobbied against Fitzgerald's appointment to U.S. attorney in 2001.
<Senator> Fitzgerald said he believes Rove was trying to influence the selection in reaction to pressure from Dennis Hastert, who was then speaker of the House, and allies of then-Gov. George Ryan, who knew that <Senator> Fitzgerald was seeking someone from outside Illinois to attack political corruption.

1. Thank you, Senator Fitzgerald
for circumventing Rove and his Boy King, and actually bringing Patrick Fitzgerald to Chicago to clean things up a bit.

>White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said that "while U.S. attorneys usually hail from the states in which they're appointed to serve, the White House would not have objected had a senator's recommendation been a nominee from outside of the state."<

If any of us believe this by now, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

Julie

5. One of the greatest things one-term Senator Peter Fitzgerald did was appoint Fitz as USA
in Illinois. He bucked his own party to do it, he knew it would take down the machine here in Illinois and he did it anyway despite the howling from the right. He didn't even try to run for a second term, in part (I always believed) because he knew the GOP machine in Illinois would tear him apart because of his hiring of Fitz.

This was a brave act by a brave Republican - Senator Fitzgerald - who did the right thing, took the consequences (not running again), and is one of the few Republicans who can claim that they really cared about American politics.
