creating a bigger crisis?
W's speech creates panic. So what does tomorrow bring?

A run on banks (due to the panic of individual/family savers in banks?)

A run (down) in the markets (due to panic of investors?)

The old - start with making the crisis sound horrendously scary formula used by bush after 911 - no longer works.

Starting by panicking listeners and then trying to sound reassuring, while looking panicked instead of firm and steadfast, doesn't sell confidence.

My guess is that W has been (since being relegated to "phoning it in" during the GOP convention, and increasingly since the recent market meltdowns - he has been pushing to get back into the limelight into is self-belief that "people believe/trust me" - even than no one else believes it. So there he is - our president. The guy who just presided over the emergency efforts that couldn't even get ice to Houston after Ike, first spiking panic, and then trying to portray confidence (in his plan).

Not.Working.

So here we are on abc and after the president goes off the air there is a magician hanging upside down swinging around portraying "defying death". Isn't there an odd irony of this juxtaposition of an Illusionist appearing just after Ws speech?

What a frighteningly weird time we are experiencing.

1. the way they do it on the radio is
to say, "not to be a doom and gloomer but your money is safe, and the economy will recover in due course". Which means in real English, "As soon as I can get out of this building, I'm pulling all my cash outa the bank because by this time tomorrow, the slow, old, suckers will be fucked".

4. except when bush - trained by but not understanding the function
and thus the application of when to use the method - of starting with scaring the cr*p out of people first before the "not to be a doom and gloomer" part of the speech.

2. Blaming the very people who dont want a bailout wont improve the chance it will pass
Whether Bush realizes or not, the base of his own party is comprised of lower income people who are being most effected by this crisis.

They dont want to bailout billionaires.

Bad move.

5. hey - bush has spent years ignoring his voter base - save pandering lines by scrpt writers
the reality that you point out wouldn't occur to W (IMO) when reading his speechwriters words.

Bad move, indeed.

3. That was not very inspiring. Neither was Mccain today. Obama, now, he was.

6. Not inspiring to thinking folks - and potentially frightening to those
who haven't been reading the news for context. By trying to push the fear early on - in order to attempt to push the 'do it my way in order to get it done' message - he may have just created panic (run on banks) conditions.

Tomorrow will be interesting (but hopefully not frightening).

8. sadly - the McCain "suspend campaign" action - for those
only paying cursory attention - also acts to accenuate the idea that the crisis is at "panic" level.

How awful if cynical political actions led to a real panic. ARGH!!!!!!

9. To my point - Indianapolis star headline: Bush: 'Our entire economy is in danger'
seriously.

There old formula is "create PANIC AND FEAR" - then be "the answer".

But - the bushadmin is so discredited that the public only hears the first part of the message (the Panic and Fear) and discount the second part (from the folks who couldn't even get ice to Houston a couple of weeks ago.)

Thanks W. Just wanted to finish tanking the economy on the way out?!
