Did anybody else come to DU because they were angry?
I did. Primarily, I needed a place to express and vent my rage and frustration.

I didn't come here BECAUSE I was angry, but it was my anger that led me here.

Blessed sanity.

34. Anger and shock over the 2000 Election

I couldn't believe more people weren't upset over the 2000 election. Every day from the election until the Supreme Court's appointing * the winner was a fresh, new assault on our democratic system.

13. I came because I heard about DU from Elizabeth Edwards.
During the last campaign, she gave a very articulate speech at a public meeting. Her thoughts mirrored mine and she mentioned reading DU every morning. Good enough for me. Been here since that campaign, without fail. Sometimes I spend too much time here, it is an addiction, someplace to go when the world gets me so upset. It is my therapy. At least here I know there are others who feel pretty much the way I do about the state of things.

The computer help and support group is also a godsend. Keeps me out of trouble on this infernal machine!

The Massachusetts forum keeps me up to date in my back yard, the cooking group helps me figure out what to put on my table. All of my favorites are of great help. Where else can anyone get so much good advice for free?

21. Curiosity
brought me here.

I found DU in the first few months after 9/11. I just wanted to find out what was really going on in the world.

DU seemed to be the place with the most news and views (and a very user-friendly format).

At first I found some of the established members to be very aggressive and very far-left. Now I'm like them.

27. I was curious about how liberal became such a dirty word
in American politics. It seemed to me that most of the good things our country was noted for in the past century were brought to us by liberals. I googled "when did liberal become a dirty word?" & got this link:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/02/11/23_liberal.html

I was so pissed off after the Carter/Reagan election that I ignored politics until the 2003 Iraq invasion. Sadly, many of the damaging politicians & policies were in place by then & it's going to be a hell of a fight to get our country back. I only hope more Americans wake up to the destruction the current administration is doing to our Constitution & country.

 ...and lots of angst, too.

35. CrispyQGirl; I remember asking my dad about that

Back during Bush the elder's term, when he was running against Clinton. That was the first time I noticed how he labeled Clinton and Gore liberals, like it was a horrible insult (card-carrying members of the ACLU is how I believe he workded it).

I just couldn't understand how it was such a bad thing.

38. My mother, who is a right winger,
uses the word 'liberal' with such scorn -- like we are the slime of the earth. This is a woman who would be out on the streets if it weren't for the safety net that social security & Medicare provide. I remind her that she is being contemptuous of the very ideals that provide for her but it goes in one ear & out the other. Years ago when I had a union job, she would belittle the unions. I reminded her that the monthly checks I sent to her were because of my good paying union job. Again, right through her head.

Your comment about the card carrying member of the ACLU always reminds me of that most excellent scene in the movie The American President when the Andrew Shepard character (the prez) called out his opponent, who continually tried to used the fact that the prez was an ACLU member against him. Shepard said (paraphrasing), "Yes, I'm a card carrying member of the ACLU & my question to you, Bob, is WHY AREN'T YOU? This is an organization that defends & protects the Constitution."

:hi: from a fellow liberal!

29. My offer to help save "The Guy James Show"
In a few years’ time, the internet will be THE broadcast medium in the U.S.
and the world. The H.O.R.N. positioned itself to be on the front end of that
change. At present, it’s a fairly small operation, with each and every
member of the H.O.R.N. working literally for the love of the medium. No
one’s getting paid. Not a dime. Because the H.O.R.N.’s business plan
recognizes th at everyday liberal/progressive Americans are constantly being
solicited by millionaire politicians, various campaigns to Save The Gay Baby
Whales and the like, the H.O.R.N.’s owners will not solicit a penny for the
network itself, preferring instead that any donor dollars go to support folks
like Guy.

Knowing as I do some of the circumstances with the folks at the center of
the H.O.R.N., I should probably also let you know that no one there is
independently wealthy. The Kincaids (Agnes and Bob) pour literally
everything they have (what money they have and loads of time, energy and
love) into making the H.O.R.N. a success. While Bob’s been in Alabama,
Agnes has literally worked 18 hour days keeping the operation afloat.

The H.O.R.N. strategy is to solicit support from liberal/progressive entities
that DO have the means and the NEED to support it. Organized labor
comes to mind. No one is more passionate about the needs of w orking
folks and the value of labor unions than the folks at the H.O.R.N. Labor,
meanwhile, frequently complains about its lack of access to the “media.”
Labor needs to step up in force and support the people who are building a
medium that they CAN access. So far there has been some success with
this tactic, but not to the degree there obviously should be.

The last thing I should say about the H.O.R.N. is the very different
approach they take to callers. Every caller there is treated with respect,
dignity and profound courtesy. Callers are respected for the individual
expertise they bring to the programs. There’s no requirement that the
caller go through a “screening” process. Give your name and get in line.
That’s it. A call to a H.O.R.N. show is much more like a call to an old and
trusted friend than it is to a radio show. Every caller gets a chance to say
everything he or she has in mind. It’s not the “that’s great. Now let me
talk about myself” approach that dominates terrestrial radio. I would even
go so far as to say that the concept is “daring” in its openness to the folks
who listen. They can do this because they are beholden to no format clock
or pre-determined commercial schedule. They have, in fact, utterly
redefined what it means to put up a political talk program. That’s why they
call it “Conversation Radio” instead of talk radio. For my part, I think it’s
amazing.

My offer to help save "The Guy James Show"

Don't let this great, passionate
Liberal voice dissappear!
We need "The Guy James Show"

When Mike Malloy was fired from AAR, I could not believe how
that happened. I only knew that I was prepared to help Mike & Kathy
any way I could to get them back on the air. As Guy James and
Bob Kincaid both will agree, Mike Malloy IS the king of Liberal Radio.

In my search to fill the void of Mike's message I remembered Mike
talking about this radio network called the H.O.R.N. I tracked it down
and the first show I heard was Guy James, WOW, I thought this
guy is really, really good! Suddenly, Guy James went into this
rant about how unfair and ridiculous it was for AAR to silence
and just take Mike's voice away. He didn't stop at just one mention,
Guy James was on this daily! For THAT I will remain loyal to
the Guy James show as long as I am able to breath. I also want
to say that Bob Kincaid was just as outraged over Mike's firing.
I NEVER miss a Guy James, Bob Kincaid and a Mike Malloy show.

I've become not only a loyal listener of Guy James, but a friend.
We communicate daily. Some of you may know that I offered to
help Guy out with the music on his show. Guy does everything
to keep the show on. He has no producer, he does his own show
research and show prep. There are no paid body's, including Guy.
In fact Guy James has poured his own money in the effort.
He can no longer sustain the expense.

If you listen to a NovaM show that airs at 3:00 pm, keep listening.
Or if you love Randi Rhodes, keep listening. Just do yourself a favor
and go to 'THe White Rose Society" and download "The Guy James Show"
AFTER listening to NovaM or Randi.

http://www.whiterosesociety.org/

Now here's my offer!

I am looking for sixty supporters for the show. All we need
is 60 (sixty!) people to donate $10 per month. Now I'll
go even further. PayPal will only take a $10 minumum.
IF, you will commit to just $5 per month, I'll trust that
you will send the donation directly to "the Guy James Show"

Simply go to Guys website and help out.
http://www.theguyjamesshow.com/

After Guy James confirms your participation, I will produce
a Guy James Show CD. It will include Guy's intro music,
some of Guy's wonderful rant s and selected songs that has
aired on the show. If will be done with crossfades to make it
flow as seemlessly as possible. There will be a nice CD cover with
the content listed on the inside. Guy will even personally
write a message to you (and sign it) to each supporter.
I will then mail it to you when you give Guy your address.

So, come on LET'S SAVE LIBERAL RADIO!

~BillySHEARS

all they did was bash Clinton. They absolutely refused to talk about current events at all, just everything Clinton did wrong (this was in 2005-6!). I don't remember exactly how I happened to pick DU, but I really like it here. I read a lot of posts during the day and I really do think of it as a type of therapy because I see so many other people here who feel the way I do about these subjects.
