Why I hate Republicans, reason # 3,782,466, which I was reminded of by Paul Newman's death
I'm sure many of you have run across this same type of bullshit. Many repubs I'm either related to or have (unfortunately) worked with or around are so damned paranoid/cynical/distrustiing, plus it's their OWN greedy, self-centered way of looking at the world, that they apparently can't imagine someone doing something simply for the good in it; helping others or the environment or whatever simply because it's the right thing to do.

Example: I actually had to work with a database guy at one job who remarked one day that Paul Newman was '... probably skimming millions off of that whole food deal he does'. !!! For one thing, besides that being outrageously stupid and outlandish, Paul Newman and his wife were already wealthy/famous; what the hell would they need or want that money for? - but more importantly, there's that constant there's-gotta-be-somethin'-in-it-for-'em bullshit... which of course we see in the voters who only vote re: their wallets, or should I say given Bush's dismal performance with the debt, their PERCEPTION of what's going to happen with their wallets.

But back to the cynical crap - I've seen this in relatives, who when confronted with lies/deception/embezzling/whatever on their side, they quickly rationalize voting for their side by saying 'oh, they all do it', or 'all politicians are crooked'. Bullshit! Our side isn't perfect either, but I'd bet the percentages of business, religious and political 'leaders' who have been caught doing all kinds of shit in recent years who are Republican is probably 3-to-1 if not higher.

As Jim Hightower said his dad said once, 'Everybody does better when everybody does better'. So doing things for the greater good are worth doing, and I do my part, for no personal gain except the feeling that I'm helping and doing the right thing, and I know we all do that kind of stuff. So f-off, Repubs and your self-centered bullshit. :^)

1. The GOP look the other way when it comes to their own crimes because ...
... they want to be treated the same way when they break the law.

In other words, they all want to get away with as much as they can, with impunity.

2. You're right about one thing, they think everybody is the same
and everybody is exactly like them.

It works both ways. Back in the 60s, people thought everybody was basically good and that even GOPs tried to do the right thing for the country, even if they were wrong in how they went about it.

The last 40 years have certainly let us see that isn't the case, at all, that the last people we want in charge of this country are the self absorbed Social Darwinist types who blame people who lack opportunity for not having taken advantage of the opportunities they lacked.

Last night's debate should have brought out the major difference in the parties to anyone who listened at all: GOPs think the economy is driven by WAR; Democrats know the economy is driven by WAGES.

If that doesn't get 'em to the polls to vote for Obama, nothing will.

3. well put
that's one of my pet peeves as well. what's that called, the straw man, circular argument, what? it's infuriating. i recall reading somewhere early on in the war some right winger, sorry can't be more specific, basically charging that anti-war progressives were happy that the war was going badly, because it validated their opposition to it! i found that utterly outrageous. i know i responded to it as well but damn if i can remember the specifics. your post reminded me of that. apparently the right wing's motivations are limited to greed and/or the lust for power and wealth, and they have truly convinced themselves that "everybody" is just like them. not so.

4. They Always Complain That Those on the Left are Doing Things for Selfish Reasons
yet it is obvious and even admitted t by those on the right, that greed is good. I suppose they don't realize that because they have entrapped themselves into a corrupt form of thinking, they are are the ones projesting their own guilt on others, ONLY BECAUSE they are Democrats or Liberals. Never once do they grasp objective analysis...

5. I work with someone like that......
She's utterly lazy & ignorant (makes no effort to actually learn the facts) but is always making these sweeping "they're all corrupt" statements. And as a co-worker, she will never do anything for anyone else. She doesn't even say thank you when people do stuff for her.

6. thanks for a very well thought out post....
I am so sick of hearing that same tired line..."oh, they all do that...." like that somehow absolves them of guilt for voting for the most corrupt bunch of assholes in our history.
