2. This is clearly a sad attempt to disrupt. |
|
This is civil disobedience. I support civil disobedience, but it does come with the acceptance of the consequences. The consequence of this is the termination of the tax exempt status of the participating churches. Go for it! IMO this would be a good result.:9  :smoke: Enjoy your short stay on DU.

4. NO church should be tax exempt... |
|
Tax them at the standard rate just like any other business enterprise.
Even Jesus said to "render to Caesar that which is Caesar's". Time to pony up.

5. I agree. Let's take away the tax exempt status of these million dollar megachurches. |
|
If they want to play in the public sector, let them pay in it as well.

10. That's the problem with this whole mess.... |

The constitution clearly states that there should be a line between politics and religion.
I don't want anyone from the government telling me how to run my church, NOR telling me what and how to preach.
I understand that many progressives think that churches should pay taxes like other businesses. But the neighborhood parish is NOT a business, but like a non-profit. In fact, none of the parishes I have pastored ever EVER had a profit. We were usually in the hole as far as sticking to the budget.
But we always kept our committments with feeding the hungry, sending food, clothing, medicines to missions, and with our goal of easing the burdens of others.
Now, if the government wants to look at our books they are welcome. But do not tell me how to run my church, nor tell me what and how to preach.
In no way do I want to use the privilege of the pulpit to tell people how to vote. I encourage them to use their rights and blessings. I encourage them to look carefully at our nation, and consider how to participate in its future.
AND I love to point out the inequality in our culture, I love to point out the weaknesses of our political system, and I love to poke our 'leaders.'
But being a pastor is a responsibility; to use that for political purposes is a denial of the constitution, and the denigration of the pulpit.
BTW: I am NOT a fan of the 'mega-churches' who are a derivation of the 'mall-culture' of the last century. These 'churches' brag about their luxurious facilities, their bookstores, their cafes, their 'programs.' I invite them to open their financial books for examination. How can a people who claim to be faithful use their people for commerce? What about Matthew 25:31-45?

12. Does the Radical RW really want to open this can of worms? After all, there are many... |
|
...many more Progressive churches than RW ones. The RW ones just have bigger mouths.
