The first *big* step toward socialism?
Maybe, just maybe, this whole financial mess is a cloud with a silver lining.

Maybe.

I am not saying it is, or even that I think it is heading that way.

But it could.

Imagine a country led by an honest to gawd liberal. Imagine that country has already nationalized a goodly part of its financial system. I can imagine an easy step toward nationalized energy. Nationalized transportation. Nationalized (IhopeIhopeIhope) medicine.

5. Keep dreaming.
Why not just take all of these mortage securities. Unravel them back into single mortages. Then post them on e-bay. I'd love to find mine and pay 20 cents on the dollar.

7. It's not socialism..
Listen up, you liberal pinkos. The bailout is not socialism; it is supply side capitalism in action. It's not a handout to lazy assholes who won't work at any other job than McDonalds; it is giving the hard working captains of our economy some assistance to get their job done.

14. LMFAO...Read This...
From my favorite oil industry website where you can learn almost anything you ever wanted to know about oil.

OIL INDUSTRY STATISTICS
US crude-oil production capacity, about 5 million barrels per day, is accomplished with about 510,000 oil wells, averaging 10.5 barrels per well per day. (That's more than half of all the producing oil wells in the world).

THE FACT THAT THE US ALREADY HAS 510,000 wells is just one reason why we cannot simply "drill more wells" to achieve a fictional energy independence, as many Americans naively suggest. Most of the oil in the US has already been found and produced - the peak of US oil production happened in 1970, and it can NOT be achieved again.

http://www.gravmag.com/oil.html

We have already gone past "peak oil" for domestic production. Adding new wells will not change that. The new wells will not be sufficient to offset the production declines in existing oil fields.

Even if we were to extract every ounce of domestic oil, we would still not come close to energy independence.

The timeline for passing legislation, selling or leasing the drilling rights and actually going into significant production is 10-20 years.

If we really want to protect our future, we should conserve as much oil as possible. We would be much wiser to focus on investing in non-oil energy technologies now. In the future, we will need oil for products that are difficult to replace such as jet aircraft, plastics, chemicals, etc.

Does this mean we should not drill new wells? No, but it does mean should use our remaining resources wisely.

I'll GO ONE STEP FARTHER
I am willing to say that it is in the national interest to nationalize any remaining oil production on public lands.

Control of this oil would give our nation greater control of our economic stability. It would also allow us to conserve the oil for uses that cannot be easily replaced by alternative means. This would give us greater long term national security than McCain's "Drill, Baby, Drill”.

16. Yes, that's one of your 3 favorite posts here
You have a very limited repertoire - you try to look legit by hating Palin and being against drilling (anybody with sense can do that), then you spike us in the back with this post.

Enjoy your stay :hi:

I realize you don't know me but I honestly thought that it was so over the top that anybody would get it. As for my repertoire, if you took the time to look up my other posts, I have to wonder why in the hell you didn't get the joke. Chill.

18. I read every one
You reposted the same post a couple of times and the rest were criticizing Palin or the bailout.

If you say it was satire, then I'll have to take your word for it. 24 posts is a bit soon to be posting such realistic satire, so don't expect much sympathy.

My two cents on the bailout:

I keep hearing about provisions to limit the salaries of the CEOs of the companies that are involved. Fuck limiting their salaries to 10 miilion or some asinine figure. Take everything they own except one house and one car. Make them work for poverty wage + 25% for the next 20 years and make damned good and sure they don't offset it with perks like stock optios or some such.

Fuck just going after the CEOs. Go after every asshole at any level that made money off of this mess right down to the shitbags that transacted the loans.

As for provisions to protect consumers who took out the loans, don't give any protection to anyone who took out a loan on any property other than the home they live in. If someone bought properties for speculation or with the intent of making money, let them go down if they can't make the payments. You play; you pay.

26. You're a fucking idiot...
People who believe in Keynesian economics are not socialists. The welfare state was invented by right-wing moderates and by social democrats who descended from the parties who supported WW1 and opposed the Russian Revolution.
