I Had The Opportunity To Spend a Day With Paul Newman
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 11:16 PM by rsmith6621

Never mind.......I did not post what was once posted in this spot to be ripped apart....It was just a time in my life that I will long remember. It was meant more as a tribute to Paul Newman then a pitty piece for me.

I'm sorry if you all took it differently.I will stick to politics from this point on......to bad so many missed the context and timeline it was written in.

6. LOL!
I liked your story.

Paul Newman was a human being. This is a good reminder.

Sometimes, I think the media goes overboard when someone dies. It's nice to pay tribute
and to remember the good that people do. However, when someone famous dies, the media
often canonizes the person--just because they die. Then, they're on to something else
in 24 hours.

7. Gee,
someone didn't do what you wanted him to do and you took offense?

That's a story about how an asshole hassled a movie star while he was pursuing his private life.

10. Trust me The NBC Affiliate Paid Me Dearly...

.....and you are rude to assume that I was there to be an opportunist ......I said I brought him a photo for him to keep as a token...He was in a public area of the track where it was opened up for the public to stop by and visit with the drivers...he called me the bad name without being provoked.....he could have just said no thanks.....I wonder if anyone really reads around here.

14. The idea...
and the ideal of photography is to be unobtrusive. I (Nikon F) have photographed Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Jim Garner and Juan Fangio. I never had any sort of problem.

If YOU came off as a paparazzi.... that was YOUR problem, not Paul Newman's.

9. "reminded him he would be nothing without us the fans"
i think he knew he was regardless. Such as statement as yours reveals your ignorance of a pure human's condition in this world. He gave away more than he ever garnered.

post pics, or else i call BS.

11. He was here for several months making a movie
Mr and Mrs Bridge - with Joanne.

Paul and Joanne liked to eat at a restaurant where my best friend was the manager. She fed them a couple times a week for several months. She said they were both just wonderful. Very gracious and unassuming.

And for several years after they were here, they still called and ordered a cake they liked from my friend's restaurant.

12. There was an old story about Newman and an autograph seeker...
that explained why he had such disdain for giving them.

Newman was in a mens room, standing at a urinal when someone shoved a piece of toilet paper and a pen in front of him and asked him to sign it.

He never signed another autograph for a stranger.

Now I don't know if this story is true or not, but I worked in Indy Car Racing for almost 8 years and he was well known for not signing them. I saw Paul just about every race weekend and constantly during the month of May at the Speedway. Never saw him sign one.

Except once. For me. Well, sort of. He signed a small Simpson Helmet that was to be auctioned off for charity by the Drivers Wives association. I was tasked with getting as many drivers and owners as I could to sign this helmet. I was following a golf cart he was riding through the race paddock and I asked him if he would mind signing it and he said "Sure. Bring it by the motorhome and I'll be happy to." I knew the Newman-Haas coach driver pretty well so I took it to him, told him Paul said he would sign it and left. 2 hours later I had the helmet back with Newman's signature on it. So I didn't see him sign it, but I had his signature.

19. I have another story...
Someone I know worked for the Newman/Haas racing team. Paul Newman obviously used to come hang out with the guys in the garage. But they were told to NEVER mention anything about his movies, and under no circumstance were they EVER to ask him for his autograph.

Well, my friend had decided he was going to change jobs (why???) and approached Newman one day, with a movie poster of "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid." He told Newman that this was his very favorite movie of all time & that he was quitting Newman/Haas, & wondered if Newman would consider signing his poster. Newman said, "Sure" and took the poster & walked away.

Obviously, my friend figured he was toast.

A couple of months later, just before my friend's last day at Newman/Haas, Paul Newman walked back into the garage, found my friend, & hit him -- well, tapped him really -- over the head with a tube of paper. Newman said, "Here, I've got something of yours." It was the poster. My friend opened up the poster to find that not only had Newman signed it, but he had Robert Redford sign it too.

The world is a much emptier place today without Paul Newman, a great humanitarian.

If it was from 1989 through 1996, I probably knew him too.

I don't know his last name. I called him "friend" to simplify the story. He is a contractor who has been to our house a couple of times.

25. My husband once met Mr. Newman, too
My husband used to do tech inspections on race cars a few years back. He loved it. He met many celebrities, but there were few he held in such high esteem as Paul Newman. Mr. Newman acted like one of the guys. He wasn't too important to bring his own car to be checked out. There were other celebrities who were just too busy to do so. (Tom Cruise, I'm looking at you.) He had barbecue with the other drivers and the race personnel. Above all, he was just nice.

27. as since you have edited your post
i will add this.

You felt it timely to tell your experience with a man that has given his life now, and most his wealth and profits towards charity and Democraic ideals.. He portrayed characters of sublime sorts in a venue that most of us focus on for entertainment, and knowledge and growth. Face it, it's the Movies, and he was a star. But he was a shining example of what we are all capable of, yet few aspire to or achieve.

Yet you felt necessary to say he called you an SOB.
Multifacted is a trait of humans. Eventually we are all judged good against the bad. I'll not judge you for one post as long as you consider what i've said. I said also post pictures, or else it's BS.

for you don't realize what they are worth, now after what you thought then of their value. That would be ironic.

i don't expect a reply, but post all the same.

28. Sorry You Can Call It BS If You Want.

I don't own a scanner....please remember that this was the 1980s.....long before the internet and digital technology.....and I only shot 1 roll of 36exp on Paul that I owned, the rest of the film was bought by the NBC affiliate....it would hardly be ethical for me to use their property for my gain would it.....

The verbal exchange was for color...it was a once and a lifetime event.....I have a Gerald Ford story for you to....but you probably wont believe me....

As said I will stick to politics from this point on.......WHY must I have to explain myself to those who don't read.

29. apology accepted for myself, that doesn't matter to me
(for if i were you, and you were me)

after all these years would not photos belong to the public domain? Perhaps you could contribute them to the Newman family, release them for their benefit. Just a suggestion.

as i said, i don't judge others on one post. (did Jerry Ford fall on you? i might believe that...)
