Man Sues Doctor for Amputating Penis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 26) - A Kentucky man who claims his penis was removed without his consent during what was supposed to be a circumcision has sued the doctor who performed the surgery.

Phillip Seaton, 61, and his wife are seeking unspecified compensation from Dr. John M. Patterson and the medical practice that performed the circumcision for "loss of service, love and affection." The Seatons also are seeking

unspecified punitive damages from Patterson and the medical practice, Commonwealth Urology.
A woman who answered the phone at Commonwealth Urology would not take a message for the doctor Thursday. But the Seaton's attorney said the doctor's post-surgical notes show the doctor thought he detected cancer and removed the penis. Attorney Kevin George said a later test did detect cancer.

"It was not an emergency," George told The Associated Press on Thursday. "It didn't have to happen that way."
Seaton was having the procedure on Oct. 19, 2007, to better treat inflammation.

16. Good idea.
Why take such a chance for cosmetic surgery? If it's medically necessary, that another matter.

15. He waits until he's 61 for a circumcision?
By that age just forget it and tie it in a knot.

22. OMG. How awful, awful, awful. That dr.'s license is hereby revoked!
Even if it WAS cancerous, why did he think he could do that without first discussing it with the patient, as well as other options?

It's scary what could go on in surgery. They make you sign this form that gives them rights to do not only the procedure you agree to, but other things that they consider an emergency at the time. I had a tense discussion w/my dr. before a surgery because of that provision. She wouldn't do the surgery without my signing that provision...so I decided to trust her and told her explicitly, in front of witnesses, that I did not want anything removed other than that small tumor, no matter what else she found, and that I didn't want to wake up missing anything that I wasn't expecting to be gone. I told her that I'd seen this movie where a dr. had performed a hysterectomy without express consent, and the woman woke up to find out that she could never have children. She'd signed that form. All came out well....she performed the surgery as planned. No surprises.
