On Colbert: James Taylor is looking really old
Man, and he's affecting some serious "old man" mannerisms.

This is rough.

4. He so seriously fried his brain years ago he didn't recognize Carly Simon in photographs...
and he was married to her at the same time.

He put Celtics fans to sleep at the Finals.

27. I think it was a Stephen Stills anecdote in reference to a RollingStone cover...
Taylor saw the picture and said "hey, she's hot!" And didn't recognize her until Stills said, "It's your wife, dude!"

Something to that effect/affect.

52. James Taylor had a HUGE drug problem. It broke up his marriage.
This really isn't rank speculation on the part of me or Stills.

His drug problem is widely known.

Doesn't mean he isn't a talented musician or a good guy, it means he pretty much fried his brain.

I always sang Sweet Baby James to him. I still think he likes it.... sometimes.

Funny side note:

I was given Taylor's latest DVD as a gift last xmas, and while he was singing that song, my son walked into the room saying, "Hey, I know this song, right?" I guess he never heard it the way it was supposed to be! LOL

31. I always begin with his music, which has been consistently interesting
at its lowpoint and at its best, it's visional and reaffirming.

James Taylor is what's right about the blend of new pioneer mentality and selective adherence to the history that got us here.

Also he has been very generous to the Democratic Party, to Native Americans, and to environmental causes.

And if you say anything negative about "Carolina In My Mind," I'll firebomb your damn house.

57. I'm 59 and I would go with
very late middle age. The late middle ages, though, were followed by the Renaissance. But you have to be kidding about Jagger. I'm mean he is still productive and energetic and all that, but he looks like shit. Okay, I found the worst picture I could, but really that is just weird. He looks like he is emceeing a party in honor of Death.

He still runs around and works the stage as well as he ever did. Though he does tend to flub the lyrics a lot. I can't imagine forgetting the lyrics to a song you've been singing for 40+ years.

Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 08:27 AM by tomg
I've been listening to him for years (actually since 1968) and I've seen a few times over the years. What might have thrown people off was 1) he was wearing a suit; 2) he is bald; 3) he normally has a guitar in his hands. What was weird was that it was as if a member of the board at some corporation suddenly went into an ass kicking version of "I'm a Road Runner" in the middle of a board meeting. Old man mannerisms? Rough? I thought it was hilarious and he kicked ass.

We all get old. You can get old while having had an interesting life, done some good, and been productive and progressive - or you can just get old. Too many people just get old. To put it in perspective, here is John Hall - formerly of Orleans, now of US congress.
