I believe memebership in the KKK hit its all time high in the mid 1930's as well as being the time of the rise of the Communist Party in the United States. Also, and you might want to check on this, but I believe the height of the negro lynchings in the South took place in the late 20's and early 30's. Poverty not only promotes it but also brings out the worst in ignorance.
